Description At the time we were living in Croatia there was one old man living in an apartment below ours that had Alzheimer's disease. He would sometimes come to our doors in the middle of the night and try to unlock the doors thinking that it was his apartment. His daughter once told me he forgot who she was, and how he cut his bed with a saw for no logical reason. What a torture that must be, loosing yourself, all your memories, reason and logic. The essence of life is contained in those experiences we had over our lives, people we met and loved, and then this punishment came and took everything from him, stole his essence, his soul, and left him with just a shell of what he is not. There was more left of that old man in his daughter that in the body he was once populating. I will always remember you my unknown friend, you gave me power to create this piece of art, but I wish you never ignited this idea in me because that would mean that you spent your old days free of this suffering. You will live inside your loved ones until the day their time comes, but you will live inside this image forever.

I'm glad you took Alzheimer's disease more seriously than some people I know. My grandmother passed away around a year ago because she eventually forgot how to eat and drink, and would choke on even the smallest drop of water. It was terribly sad, but at the same time I got the chance to visit with and assist her alongside my dad every night for about 8 months after her impaired memory became noticeable. She encouraged my art ever since I was a kid and even when she couldn't remember who I was, I would bring my sketchbook and she would say, "That's purty, sweetie! " I became closer to her than ever before; still, her side of the family has a long history with this disease and I imagine I will have to do the same with my dad, and someday it may be me. I'm incredibly touched by your piece and you've truly brightened my day with both your artwork and your story of remembrance

The only thing that gives away that this is rendered is the power strip on the right. Otherwise - could swear that is was some kind of photo manipulation or miniature. Truley awesome work!

Beside it's technically perfect, it touches me deeply. First I just saw the picture and recognized all the impressing details and the light. After reading your description, I was totally stunned how you were able to catch the kind of this disease in such an opressive and touching way. It's like you can grab the atmosphere out of the picture. I bet it costs you hours after hours of work. You totally deserved this Daily Deviaton.

Thanks. It did take me a lot to balance all the details and make models, but I like how it ended so I am glad I spend that time perfecting it.

I've taken care of many patients with dementia and Alzheimer in all stages. The chaos in that kitchen is a great representation of a mind that slowly forgets itself and becomes only a container instead of a higher intelligence. The gears in your piece are the most haunting part to me because it's a solid reminder time keeps turning regardless of what will happen. As for the shell of your man there, it looks like he's trying to escape from the collapse of his mind because a small part of him still exists. This goes along with towards the mid stage of Alzheimer where many people realize they are forgetting things and know they are slowly losing themselves to something we can't cure.
