Description « A Storm Brews »

The cold wind howled outside of the cave’s mouth, it’s sounds nearly blocking out the painful grunts of a female snow leopard as she dealt with the taxing pains of labor. It was late winter within the western Mongolian Mountain Range that the newly made parents had settled down at, and worry was now setting upon their shoulders as they realized just how much trouble they would be in if they had as difficult of a hunting season this winter as they had before.

Then, a cry, the father, Demetrius, lifted his head, racing over to his mate as they looked down upon the young leopardess that was their first and only cub. She had the same silver toned pelt as her mother, and the mask of black around her eyes was an obvious trait that had come from her father. Names were debated back and forth for a little while, until finally the father gave up, giving in to the name that his mate knew as going to be their daughter’s…

Ileana, their shining light.

Birth
The frigid lands known as only the western most edges of the Mongolian Mountain range was Nedria’s first home as a cub. Her life back then was a simple one, stay curled up close to mother and suckle, listen to father tell his stories, and learn more about what life she would expect to have as she grew older. Images of finding a mate within this territory would on occasion flash through her mind, but she pushed them aside as she grew from a newborn cub until a strong and healthy snow leopard. Her first three months were full of curiosity, adventure, and the typical ceremonies that young snow leopards go through to mark the passage of time and their age.

She was young, energetic, spunky, and carefree; the exact opposite of the Nedria that everybody has come to know and love. Of course, her parents kept a close eye on her between hunting trips to make sure that she wasn’t taken away from them or worse, killed. Rumors had spread throughout the land that there were humans in the mountains, and because of this, her parents took extra precautions and moved higher up in the mountain range, risking their chance of finding food in order to keep their daughter and livelihoods alive and well.

The first time she was allowed to go further than twenty steps away from the cave that was their home, Nedria, at this point in time, known as Ileana, experienced the worst shock a young cub could ever have.

She had raced up ahead of her parents by about fifteen paces, only to suddenly feel the strange vertigo of the land rushing quickly away from her. A strange substance was ensnared around her entire body, catching her small paws and ears to get caught within the many holes and crevices within the mesh. into a rather strange covered substance. She closed her eyes briefly, letting out a loud shriek as a sudden noise was emitted from the strange contraption that had caught her off guard. Her parents came running towards her, determined to save her from the strange obstacle, when suddenly a group of strange creatures appeared from the darkness of a cave, their pointed sticks set upon none other than Nedria’s parents. Her father raced forward, catching them off guard for a moment while her mother managed to pull her free and hide her behind a rock, but it wasn’t enough.

There were just too many for two snow leopards to handle.

Unfortunately for the young snow leopard, all she managed to see was the blood stained snow before a second group appeared, taking her away from her homeland forever. She tried fighting, but it was no use. The tied her up, stuffed her within another strange substance, and did not let her lose from the bag she was in until a proper cage was removed from their caravan. Nedria wouldn’t realize it at the time, but this would be her first and last time out in the mountains that were to be known as her home.
