I'm thinking of M. C. Escher [link] , I'm sure you've seen his work before. Here's an example: [link] but I couldn't find exactly an example that illustrates what I mean. I'm thinking of something along these lines: [link] , you can see how crossing pieces of black is inverted yielding a white area.

lol, I hate it when I sketch or draw, everyone always says "oh you should color it" haha no, lol. I hate coloring my sketches, most of the time lol. I can completely see where your coming from.
