Queen Viarraluca and her handmaid Elissa are the lead couple from my novel-in-progress, First Empress. Where Queen Viarra is exceptional in countless ways and knows how to gain great mileage by appearing goddess-like, I really went out of my way to make Elissa pretty ordinary. Viarra is tall, elegant, powerful, muscular, and highly introspective, Elissa is medium-height, plain, modest, slender, and fairly average intelligence. Elissa was given to the young Viarra as a slave and companion when they were girls. They quickly became friends and later lovers. I want it to say something about Queen Viarra that she could easily have any man or woman in her kingdom, but chooses to be with this simple, plain, barbarian slave girl.
