The Red AngelChapter Two
Among a forest just on the outskirts of town, the evening breeze ruffled the green pelts of the trees. A little gray tabby bounced happily alongside a bigger, red feline. The kitten, named Yuki, bounced playfully while the red cat, Digi, padded along quietly. Yuki was quite glad to have finally found someone to talk to after so long, while Digi, on the other hand, wanted nothing of it. The kit spoke to the older cat with enthusiasm, much to the latter's disdain.

"When you find a place to stay, can I live with you?" Yuki asked. "We're friends now, and I'm sure it'll be great!"

"Whatever..." Digi muttered, though she meant the opposite.

"Yay! We could live out here, it'll be fun! We can go hunting for mice, just like real forest cats! You can teach me!"

    "Fine," the red cat sighed.

"Sweet! And then, when we're settled in, we could have a party!"

"A what..?" Digi asked, a bit confused by the suggestion. She leapt back when Yuki popped up from behind a boulder sitting a few feet away. She was wearing a party hat, and had a noise maker in her mouth, on which she blew with a wink. Digi was left feeling bewildered by the kitten's random behavior.

"Okay..." the cat said, before continuing on her way.

"Have you ever been to a party?" Yuki asked, bounding after Digi. "Parties are so much fun! You get to play games, and get treats, and every one of your friends are there too! At least that's what I've heard, I never really had a party either, but I've always wanted to, and..."

Digi was tired of hearing Yuki ramble. I swear to god, if this kid doesn't quiet down, I'll tear out my fur! There must be something I can do to shut her up... Just then, a thought came to her.

"Hold on," she said as her ears stood up. She glanced to her left, then to her right. "I just remembered something."

    "What is it?" Yuki asked.

"I think we passed by a bunch of pinecones a few minutes ago," she said. "I used to collect pinecones, but only the big ones. I need you to do me a favor and bring me back the biggest pinecone you can find."

"Okay!" Yuki said as she spun around.

"Wait!" Digi hollered. "I don't want just any old pinecone, I want one that's this long." She drew a line in the dirt with her claw, measuring about a foot in length.

"Wow, that looks bigger than me!" Yuki declared. "That shouldn't be a problem!"

"Good," Digi nodded, "and don't come back until you find the perfect one."

"I won't let you down!" the kitten said optimistically,  before running off.

Once Yuki was out of sight, Digi let out a sigh of relief. "Finally..." Digi proceeded to walk through the wilderness on her own, glad to have the calming silence to herself once more. It was not meant to last, however, because after a few minutes went by, she heard Yuki scream.

"...Oh, she probably just tripped or something..." Digi said to herself, ignoring the shout.

    "Help!" Yuki cried.

Digi didn't look back. This was her chance to get rid of that pesky kit for good, and she wasn't about to blow it. "Hmph. Good riddance."

As much as she wanted to be alone again, something deep inside demanded her to turn around.

    "Digi!!"

The red cat rolled her green eyes with another sigh. Then she spun around and ran towards the shouting. She soon found Yuki being chased by a small, white creature.

"It's gonna eat me! Help!!" Yuki cried.

Upon closer inspection, Digi discovered that a white snake was the one causing the commotion. She ran towards the reptile, stomping her feet in an attempt to frighten it away. Her eyes glowed red as she snarled.

One look was all that the snake needed. It swiftly slithered away after seeing Digi's terrifying expression. Once Digi's eyes returned to their usual color, Yuki uncovered hers.

"Whoa, that was amazing!" said Yuki. "I didn't see what you did, but it worked!"

"Would you stay out of trouble?" Digi hissed. "You're going to get yourself killed if you're not careful!"

"Okay, okay..." Yuki said, looking down at her paws. "I'm sorry."

"Fine, whatever. Let's get out of here before more of those things arrive."

The two traveled farther into the wilderness once again. Yuki started to smack her lips, which soon began to annoy Digi. The red cat glanced over her shoulder irritably. "Would you cut that out?" she frowned.

    "But I'm thirsty!" Yuki whined.

"Of course you are..." Digi said with a sigh. Then she realized just how thirsty she was herself. When was the last time she even had a drink? Digi began to look around for any sign of water, but spotted a russet shape instead. It was a cat, watching them.

"Hello?" Digi called. "Can you tell me where--"

Before Digi could finish, the ginger-furred cat ran off.

"Hey, wait!" Digi shouted, running after the cat, with Yuki not far behind.

The cat was much faster than Digi; they weaved through the trees as they sped away. Digi pumped her legs harder in her pursuit for the stranger. By the time she and Yuki came to a clearing, the sun had begun to set, with the cat nowhere in sight.

"So much for that water..." Digi muttered. She kicked herself mentally for chasing after the cat, only to increase her thirst in the process.

"Digi," Yuki said, beginning to tremble. She dropped onto her hindquarters and pointed towards the shadows. "Digi, look!"

Glancing over her shoulder, Digi was surprised to find many pairs of glowing eyes staring right at the duo. Digi fluffed up her red fur, arching her back with an angry yowl. "Ambush!"

Digi tried to run, but someone firmly planted their paw upon her tail. She whipped her head around to find a silver tabby frowning at her with deep blue eyes. Digi let out a hiss. "What do you want?"

"I simply wish to know what you are doing here," the cat said calmly.

"We're looking for water," Yuki replied.

"Is that so?" the she-cat asked. "Nothing else?"

"If you didn't want us here, then tell him that," Digi snarled, motioning towards the russet feline. "He's the one who led us right to you."

"I know," the tabby nodded. "That was intentional."

    "What for?" Digi demanded.

"You see, we need more cats on our side," she explained. "Hunting has become increasingly difficult, what with the bigger creatures running amok. We'd highly appreciate it if you were willing to help us."

Digi glanced around the clearing, finding that the cats had stepped out from the shadows. They each looked tired and thin, but still held hostile stares. Digi caught one looking at her with a toothy grin. Pink stripes clashed with her gray fur, and red eyes seemed to watch Digi as if she were her prey. Digi tore away her gaze, focusing on the tabby leader once more.

"If this is how you go about recruiting cats, then you have the wrong idea," Digi glared.

"I see..." the leader said thoughtfully. "Well then, if you see it that way..." With a twitch of the tail, the leader signaled her followers to unsheathe their claws. "Then those who aren't willing to join us are considered enemies."

Digi and Yuki huddled together, eyes upon the band of rogues. Each one inched closer to the duo, baring their fangs like a hungry pack of dogs. One of the pink and gray cat's eyes seemed to flash a lime green as she smiled maliciously. Yuki shook with terror while Digi stood her ground.

"Cover your eyes," Digi ordered the kitten.

    "What for?" she asked.

    "Just do it!"

Once Yuki obeyed, Digi's eyes shone an angry red as she sheltered the kitten beneath her. A rush of energy flooded Digi as she dug her claws into the ground. The energy abruptly shot out from her being, throwing the enemy cats off their paws. Yuki opened her eyes to find the cats dazed and confused.

"Come on!" Digi exclaimed, grabbing Yuki by the scruff of her neck. She fled with the kitten dangling from her jaws.

The silver tabby shook her head as she regained her balance. "After them!"

Digi glanced over her shoulder as she ran, spotting a few of the rogues chasing after her. She looked ahead, paws pounding against the dirt. Yuki let out a terrified mew as the cats continued to follow. The rogues were weak from hunger, and before long, Digi managed to lose them.

Digi dropped Yuki to the ground, breathing heavily. Her paws ached with pain as she walked towards a nearby tree. Lying down, she began to groom her back fur with her tongue. Digi's mouth felt drier than ever after fleeing from the other cats.

"Thanks," Yuki huffed, beginning to calm down.

Digi didn't respond. She laid her head down upon her paws.

By the time Yuki was calm again, her eyes lit up with amazement. "I can't believe how scared they were! They looked like they had seen a ghost or something! You were so cool!"

"It was nothing," said Digi, "they were just cowards."

"Maybe, but you were still amazing!"

Yuki's ears pricked as she heard a distant noise. "Do you hear that?"

Digi angled her ears, catching the sound as well. She sat up straight as she recognized the noise. "Running water!"

"Let's go!" Yuki declared, bounding off towards the sound. Digi followed suit, and soon, they found a little stream running with crystal clear water.

Yuki lapped up some water vigorously. "Mmm! I've never had something so good in my life!"

"Water doesn't usually taste like anything," Digi said as she bent down to take a drink. But Yuki was right, the water was cool and quite delicious. Once they had their fill, they settled down underneath the shade of a tree.

Yuki's jaws stretched open with a huge yawn. "Today was fun, but also scary."

Digi's only reply was a grunt.

"Sorry I couldn't find your pinecone," she sighed.

Digi flicked her ear, a little surprised to hear that Yuki hadn't forgotten about her false task. "Don't worry about it," Digi muttered. "You can try again tomorrow."

"Okay..." Yuki plopped herself onto the grass, and curled up into a furry ball. "Well, g'night," she said, before closing her eyes. Moments later, she was fast asleep.

Digi looked up at the stars, green eyes full of wonder. What am I doing on Earth if I'm supposed to be dead? Why can't I remember anything else? Surely there must be a reason why I'm here...was it an accident?

She glanced at the little ball of fur sleeping soundly beside her. I can't let her know what I really am...I don't think the world is ready for it.

Digi laid her head down again, the questions still swimming in her mind like little fish. Why is this happening? Who was I..?

The gentle sounds of the forest filled her ears, and before long, Digi drifted off to sleep.

A white snake quickly slithered into the farther reaches of the woods. Suddenly, its reptilian body seemed to disintegrate, before reforming into a deer. The creature's long, slender legs gave it a boost in speed. Then it transformed into a bird, flapping its wings below the trees. Finally, it became a rabbit, before coming to a stop underneath the shade of a tree. Among the shadows stood another creature, one that made the rabbit cower.

    "Well..?" came an intimidating voice.

"She got away..." the rabbit spoke.

"Dammit..! How dare you let her escape!?"

"I-I didn't intend to, she just...you should've seen the look in her eyes, I--"

"Oh, for fuck's sake, Apprentice, don't give me your excuses!"

The rabbit jumped upon hearing the other snap.

"You have let me down yet again! And get rid of that vile form, will ya!?"

The rabbit nodded, before transforming once more. It now appeared to be a white, cat-like creature with no eyes or nose. They stood on two hind legs with a hoof upon each. The demon's tail, which was ribbon thin and had thorns like a rose, lowered and placed itself between their legs. "I-it won't happen again, I promise..." The Apprentice stuttered, twiddling his thumbs.

"Oh, I know it won't..." a clawed hand slipped out from the shadows, before flexing its fingers menacingly, "...because I'm sending you back into the pit of hell, maggot!"

"No, wait!!" The Apprentice shouted, but he wasn't given another chance to speak, for a pentagram appeared below his feet, summoning a portal beneath him. The pale demon screamed as the ground swallowed him whole, sending him plummeting into the depths of hell. The ground instantly reconstructed itself as the portal closed.

    "Alright, who's next..?"

Upon the trunk of a tree, another pentagram appeared, before a second portal opened up. Another cat-like demon stepped through, hands upon its hips and a grin upon its face.

    "Ah, yes...The Mischievous, correct?"

"You can just call me Shade," the demon replied.

"You are The Mischievous, and you will continue to be referred to as such," the other said with a bit of a harsh tone. "Understand?"

    "Fine, whatever..." Shade said irritably.

"Right then...do me a favor and don't screw up like that little brat. Are we clear?"

"Yep! Right away, Deceiver!" Shade responded.

    "Good...now, go find that angel!"

Shade transformed into a crow, before flying off into the night sky, cawing as he went.

The Deceiver let out a wicked laugh. "Don't even think that you're safe out here, little angel...we will find you..."
