===================
Ace had to laugh, though he tried to hide it behind a tree as he watched the pretty little fawn, once again try to sneak away from her mother in an attempt to steal a few more minutes of play. She almost did it too, getting as far as the wattle bush on the outskirts of the clearing when a glance from the leader, Starling, clued in the fawn’s mother to the fact that her child was about to break into a run. With a quick deft movement, Thea grabbed her daughter’s tail, effectively preventing the young fawning from making a further get-away.
“Awww muuuuuuuuum!” Amadine whined as she made a feeble attempt to free her tail before she huffed, flopping down and grumbling, “I’mnottired….”
“Amadine, please just listen to us.” Erin tried, his fur looked as disheveled as he sounded, as he was the one who had to chase Amadine practically to the river the last time she made a break for it.
As Ace chuckled in sympathy, Thea shot him an exasperated glance and the silver stag felt a little bad that he hadn’t been able to help drain more of the little one’s energy today. Usually Ace would have done more, though young Armadine was in no way biologically related to him, despite calling him Uncle, it seemed she’d inherited Ace’s endless energy by osmosis. But today, Ace had been off on a day spent with his mate Flower, and so Amadine had to deal with her own energy.
Of course the young fawn’s parents had done plenty to play with her and drain her energy, even the other fawns play hadn’t managed to get all of it, so now Amadine was full of beans and certainly not ready for sleep.
“It’s time for bed.” Thea stated, gently but firmly, stepping between her daughter and the forest.
Amadine gave another huff, then seemed to spot Ace, still hiding behind a tree so he wouldn’t get into the way.
“Uncle Aaaace!” The young fawn cried, stumbling to her hooves and racing over. The silver stag tried to smother a chuckle and took a step back, shaking his head.
“Oh no kiddo. You have to listen to your mama.” He said, but Ace couldn’t help but melt at that little face. He’d been present the entirety of Thea’s pregnancy and through the birth, he’d fallen in love with that little baby, head over heels as if she were his own.
“Pleeeeaaaase Uncle Ace!” She pleaded, laying down against his hooves in an attempt to get her own way. The silver stag glanced up helplessly at Thea, but seeing her give an exhausted sigh, he decided to do his best to help.
Ace reached down and grabbed a bit of Amadine’s hair, giving it a gentle tug, but enough to make her squeak in surprise at the cheeky, playful gesture. Her small face had lit up in delight and Ace couldn’t help but chuckle as he nuzzled her in a gentle roughhousing gesture pretending to tickle and push her with his horns. The little fawning squealed and giggled, trying to get away from the tickling. Ace let this go on for a moment before he settled down beside her and let her go.
“You know all the great Stormbringers need to sleep too right?” He asked her, watching her deep brown eyes light up as she sensed a story. A small black and white form fluttered down to perch on Amadine’s back, watching up at Ace with piercing amber eyes . Unfazed, Ace shifted the air in his throat in order to generate a friendly warble towards the bird that had chosen the young fawnling to be it’s companion. After a moment of silence it gave a warble in return. So Ace settled down beside the little fawnling, bringing his face a little closer to hears, causing the young fawn to lean forward in anticipation.
“One day, there was a young Windbone Fawnling. She was a beautiful roan colour, with mane the colour of the clouds.” He began, watching her deep brown eyes widen as she realised she was the one he was describing.
“That’s me!” She exclaimed, getting comfortable, truly taken with the story now.So Ace laughed and began to weave a story, one about adventure, danger and peril, but most of all, about the brave and beautiful fawnling who stole the hearts of those she met and saved the day despite all the odds. At some point, young Osprey, who also decided she was not tired had also come to join and listen to the story, and so another brave heroine was added to the tale and again, Ace watched the little one's eyes light up as they saw themselves not as the young fawns they were, but what they could be.
Through all of this, Amadine listened with wide eyes and baited breath as she imagined the scenes described to her. Then, when it was all said and done, Ace told her about the song they now played in her honour. So, Ace began to manipulate the flow of the air around his horns, weaving it in and out of the holes at different speeds and forces. Suddenly an eerily beautiful sound danced into the air, rising and falling like the waves of the story. As the music played through their air, the other fawnlings stopped to listen, and Amadine’s eyes grew heavier with every passing note, until finally they closed and her breathing became even. Ace continued to weave the song between his horns, using them the way he believed they were meant for, those who listened, enjoyed his music, some even falling asleep also.
Thea wandered over with a sigh of relief and curled around her daughter while Osprey fought sleep. Erin had collapsed on the ground where he was, apparently too relieved that his enegetic little girl was finally asleep, to worry about where he himself was going to lay. Amalthea blinked up at her adopted brother greatfully, and Ace smiled, glad to have been able to help and to share his music with all.
