Description "Upon my return in 1918, I settled in Chicago, Illinois as a nurse in one of their hospitals. All the doctors had trouble focusing on their patients when I came into the room; it was actually there, at that hospital, that I learned that apparently, to humans, I looked beautiful, like an angel I heard one mutter. It was also there that I met a man by the name of Carlisle Cullen. Normally, I would not even have considered remembering his name, but I knew that there was a reason I met this man, this vampire, just like there must have been a reason for me to meet Roxanne: fate was apologizing to me for all of its cruel jokes. But there was only one true reason I remembered this vampire; a reason that shot a surge of hope through my granite body: Dr. Carlisle Cullen was a vampire and he had golden eyes.

"I would offer to help him whenever I could, needing to be close to someone who was so much like myself. I think he knew that I was also a vampire hiding in plain sight, though he gave no sign that he did, a favor we did for each other. Later that year, the first wave of the Spanish Influenza hit and the families were pouring in. The room I was assigned to watch over was that of the Masen family, the mother, the father, and their only son. The father, Edward Anthony Masen Sr., passed out on the bed, weak from the disease, and died shortly after. His wife, Elizabeth Masen, seemed to the strongest of the three of them, staying conscious during the day and sleeping, mostly, normally at night. The son, Edward Anthony Masen Jr., drifted in and out of consciousness and I needed to be constantly at his side, incase something happened and he immediately needed medical aid.

"I thoroughly enjoyed being Edward's nurse; even though he was in the hospital, dying in his bed, he was still the most thoughtful and gentlemanly person I had ever met. He would even ask, albeit jokingly, if he could get me anything to eat or drink. I would always giggle politely and tell him, also jokingly, that as soon as he got better, I would let him treat me to dinner. He was also very entertaining, asking the most insignificant  questions and reading every subtle change my face made. Just from my expressions, he could tell that I had lost someone very close to me, along with guessing many other things about me.

"I was sitting by his bedside one night, reading The Tales of Genji yet again, when I felt his eyes on me. I sighed and set my book aside to enjoy another onslaught of questions. He was silent for a second too long, missing a beat, and asked me exactly what I was. I started, and gave him a hard look, studying him; I could tell, even in the dim light, that he was near death… How could I deny such an amusing young man anything at this point, when he had given me something to look forward to everyday? I told him  everything. He did not interrupt; he did not look shocked; he simply… listened. When I had finished, he chuckled, telling me he had suspected something along those lines. He then asked me if his doctor - Dr. Cullen - was also a vampire, for he had noticed some similar traits. His eyelids closing, doomed to never open again, I gave a simple yes. He smiled, glad to know that I trusted him with our most taboo secret and his disease slammed into him yet again, dragging his consciousness into a pit of nothingness. I ran for the doctor, playing my part perfectly. Carlisle gave the dying boy a look over, saying he had just fallen asleep. Then Edward's mother, whom I did not realize had been awake, called him over to her.

"I left the room, pretending to be in some small state of shock over the boy, and listened to the conversation that I knew might doom both of us, both the vampires in the hospital. But she simply asked him to do whatever was in his power to save her son, always over emphasizing the phrase 'your power' while making her final demands. She died a few days later, still trying to help me nurse her son up until the end. Her son never regained consciousness… in the hospital, at least. I was quite sure that the doctor was going to bite him in order to fulfill the dying boy's mother's last wish. Dr. Cullen took the boy from the hospital, leaving me to give the news of his death, which I was happy enough to do…"
