Ages-old military saying: "Never, ever pick up a bar of soap... and if you really have no other choice than to do so, at least make sure you're backed up against a wall."
That X-Com chappie is a dead duck... screwed.

What's the name of the new, free x-com clone games already? UFO something-something...

There's one called UFO: Extraterrestrials, which is an "inspired by" type of game, and probably the one you're thinking of.
And there's also a game called Project Xenocide, which is pretty much a straight-up remake of the original X-Com, except it's still in early alpha stages.

I've been playing X-COM for the first time. I've been following a Let's Play--a couple, actually--on the SomethingAwful forums and wanted in. Incidentally, the LP just got past a Chrysalid-based storyline wherein the entire nation of Japan was taken over by the bastards.
I've not reached them yet because I keep getting slaughtered in the first mission... on Beginner. To quote a wiser man than I, "Damn I suck!"

Good thing the bastard doesn't have the "Prime raep" and "Throw" options If he could use it as an explosive area...
And the soap- picking guy better have a primed demo charge in the backpack.

Oh man... that game's awesome. Did you play squad command for the nintendo DS? That game was so obviously a pathetic x-com rape.

You mean Rebelstar Command? That was made by the same people who made the original X-COM.

6 of the best-trained soldiers on Earth: $144.000
The heaviest and most powerful weapons and armour availiable to Mankind: $350.000
Losing your entire squad in one turn to a Chryssalid: priceless.
Well, not really. More like $1000 to replace the computer you just threw out of the window in rage.

Oh... yeah, those Cryssalids where a pain in the ass. Nothing a heavy Plasma Cannon couldn't handle though. But at the Start of the Game, specially during Terror Missions those Guys where real bastards.

oh dude, I had my rookies with standard rifles shoot all stand around one once just to take it down. It took 8 people taking two burst shots each to kill it.
