Description
My entry to the OC creation contest [link] for the avatar fans clubWhile Aang and Sokka run after that strange new creature, Katara stays behind and looks curiously upon the statues in the inner sanctuary. Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. Men and women with different expressions...and she finds that one statue seems to smile as if it had been laughing for a thousand years.
Name: Avatar YiLin
Age: Lived up to Age 32, previous airbender avatar before Yangchen. 800-900 years before Aang.
Gender: Female
Nation: Air
Likes: Playing and goofing around with children, nature, ancient Air Nomad folklore, flight, freedom, her fellow 'sisters' at the Eastern Airtemple, and...perfume?
Dislikes: (when she was quite younger) her old strict, dogmatic and overbearing airbending teacher; Master Eunhee, embarrassing/awkward romantic situations, violence and injustice against innocent people, having to put her duty as the Avatar above her own personal feelings.
Background History: More than 700 years ago, In a time of relative peace, the reincarnated spirit of the Avatar was born in a girl from the Eastern Airtemple. YiLin thought she would be destined for the mundane life of an airbender priestess, spending the rest of her days doing repetitious bending exercises, temple chores, and saying endless prayers and chants. Then, of course, came the day when her true destiny was told to her. YiLin started out being a shy, somewhat prudish child. But because of the stern, but fair, tutilage of her master; Eunhee, YiLin eventually grew to be a wise, open-minded and generous, (though still somewhat naive) woman. Seeing life beyond the mountains during her training, YiLin eventually learned to greatly enjoy traveling the world, meeting all sorts of people, giving help and protecting the small and weak.
Avatar YiLin is not known historically for being as brave and beautiful in battle like the honorable Avatar Kyoshi, as dignified and respected like the legendary Avatar Roku, or even as spiritually intune with the supernatural as Avatar Onsui. But these days, she is remembered for establishing a small abbey in the Northern Earth Kingdom, a sanctuary for refugees and the orphaned, an abbey that stands to this day.
She was sadly killed in an attempt to save that abbey,and its inhabitants from the attack of renegade benders from the west. Some consider her death as foolish and not at all fitting for a powerful being such as the Avatar, but YiLin would not have had it any other way.
Extra Info: As one of her earlier duties, Avatar YiLin was once called upon to look after the five-year-old daughter of the FireLord; Princess Hiashi, after an assassination attempt on the FireLord's palace. The child was sent away with YiLin to the Air Temple for safety. Hiashi was a spoiled, sullen girl who did not take to living with lowly AirNomads very well. It took a while to get over the little princess's temper tantrums 9__9;;;, but because of YiLin's patience, sensible amount of discipline and kindness with her, Hiashi grew to love YiLin as her own mother, and YiLin herself (who had dreamt of having children) grew attached to the child.
~~~
Ages later, Aang cannot help but sense the spirit of something vaguely familiar in Prince Zuko...even though he is not sure what it means.
(Yeah, I know it seems bombastic to create an AVATAR >__> but I've had this character in my head for a while and she wants to get out. ^^...and I apologize for the lengthy bit of extra info)
EDIT: I'm not sure if FEMALE airbenders are actually all bald. Though I do know that there are some buddist sects that have female monastics shave their heads as well as the males [link]
AND wear cute headresses ^w^ [link]
But perhaps if the female airbender isn't a priestess/nun/whatever she could have hair.
Like Malu the ghost witch (aka the new avatar character as seen in upperdeck avatar card trading website) [link]
I'm just saying this because I have no idea if you know or not.
Yi is pronounced "ee".
Also... it's my mom's maiden name. When it's spelled in English, it turns into Lee. There was also a Korean dynasty called the Yi Dynasty. Pretty cool, huh?
I'm related to Korean nobles... hehe extra info on me.
Wow thanks. But I'm sure Yangchen has a backstory too, I don't think they were just able to develop it.
She's not, unfortunately. XD
Just a fan character.
I could have made her to exist a couple hundred years earlier for convenience sake, but at the time, Avatar Yangchen did not exist, so I thought not much of it.
The last part especially resonated within me. I think you summary and depiction of her character makes this deviation amazing. She's a great character!
I love this concept of the avatar, and I love the linkage between Aang's past life and the Fire Nation royals...
but really I commented to ask this. Does Princess Hiashi have anything to do with Hyuuga Hiashi from Naruto?
Avatar OCs are the best; it's just too awesome that the whole history of the reincarnation cycle is up to the imagination...and what an imagination you have! I don't think your character creation is bombastic at all; she lives in a time of peace and there's nothing Mary-Sueish about her.
And such BEAUTIFUL artwork! I love how many different perspectives you put on it, and not just in mood and color but in style as well. I love everything about this piece...each little section is brilliant enough to be stand-alone artwork.
Wonderful job! <3333
haha, I'm sorry but these days, I'm just a bit too swamped with work and school to do such.
But I'm sure there are others who may be able to.
Assuming they're not busy too of course.
Though, please take in mind that asking someone upfront to make requests for you may be considered as a bit rude to some people.
That's so cool Isaia! In the last part where her headdress is blown away, I thought it was Aang. XD So you're saying that Zuko was a descendant of Hiashi and Aang seemed to be familiar with Zuko already before he fought him? I can't really remember anything about Aang being familiar with Zuko. Or maybe it's part of the OC? Cool relation with the abbey in the "Bato of the Water Tribe" episode. Avatar YiLin looks so pretty just like the kiddy cuteness of Aang. It's like all Air Nomads are always happy and optimistic.
I really like this OC. Cool stuff!
I'm not sure if anyone has already gone over this in previous comments (there are simply too many for me to go over in-depth), but in the Avatarverse, female monks shaved only the front half of their heads, and left the rest to grow long. It kind of raises questions of how they put those tattoos there without disturbing that long pretty hair at the back, but hey. Whatev. If she wants to go bald, let her! You've obviously done some research, and the delightful hat is a great touch that adds a lotta personality. Nice job. 8)
I know, I've seen em too
and this was done before they showed airbender wimmin canon.
I've thought perhaps just to make this as a sub branch of female airbenders from long ago. So not to give excessive canonbending. X3
Two words: Awe. Some. xD
This is one of the best Avatar OCs I've ever seen! I love how you portrayed her in the different mediums (statue, chinese drawing, and childhood scene), sooo creative! *spazz* Her character design is sooooo great, and I especially luv her close up expressions: namely the humble one <3. Lol I just listed everything in the picture didn't I? xD and HOMG now im ranting. Ah well, much luv! ^-^
Her story is sad tho, soooo young... >.< MUST do fan-art of her sometime!
!!! Thank you! I'm glad you like my OC that much.
I really get self-conscious about my OC's sometimes, worried about making them over the top, too plain, or other things XD
But I'm glad that the aspect of character designing is able to appeal. Thank yoU!
and thanks again for the many other kind comments!
YiLin is an excellent character! She inspired my OC, Avatar Lan. But Lan's from the Northern Water Tribe.
Her hairstyle's a bit like GranGran's but it's flowy and wavy and it has hair loopies!
If they make a fourth season, YiLin should appear on it!
