Critique: My main concern is with the way it fits into the background. Does it stand out a lot? Is it too disconnected from it? Thank you.

This is amazing, I really love the squirrel's expression (if you can call it that).
Around here we don't have red squirrels, so I don't know if its fur is too bright or not, but I like it - it's the subject of the piece, it should stand out some. If you're concerned about the contrast, I'd suggest enhancing the little details in the ground, maybe painting the grass more carefully instead of leaving it bland. At small view it does stand out more because you can't really see the background except for big swaths of color.
Otherwise it's great, detail in the squirrel is amazing, and I love the colors, especially the tail.

I think the piece is a smooth blend between the squirrel and the background. I would not have even thought to look at that point if you had not pointed it out. Perhaps if you wanted you could make the background details a tiny bit more distinct.

Well I sure as hell couldn't paint that good even with the best reference in the world. Are their feet naturally that curved and ears that long? I've never taken a too close look myself.
I love the furr, it has the texture, colour, lighting all right.
