Middle Earth seems to be full of inexplicable weird obstacles. Gollum started his literary life as one of those inexplicable weird obstacles! He went from ‘thing in cave that intrudes in one chapter of a children’s story’ to a main villain & center of a prominent moral theme in a fantasy epic that was foundational to the genre. We’re all so proud of him! I wonder what Sméagol would say if you could somehow ask him his opinion on graduating from ‘thing in cave that gets humiliated by a hobbit’ to ‘thing that gets tortured, nearly starves to death in Mordor, and dies in a volcano- and also gets humiliated by a hobbit.’ But I digress.

Today, he’s discovered a random glowy blue thing. When I drew this I was thinking that it just now appeared in the water while Gollum was merely going about his business, devouring the flesh of some innocent eel-type creature.

However, looking at the end piece, he could also be trying to bribe the whatever-it-is with nice foods to get it to let him swim through here. There’s a fifty fifty chance the glowy light is completely benign and will do nothing worse than cause eyestrain, in which case dropping shards of flesh on it will only produce an aesthetic blight. But Gollum will feel mildly accomplished, as well as deeply irritated to have given up his food.
