Yeah, I though that too but took colours from photos of real people and -to my surprise- men's lips are as pink as girl's.

I just did what I always do, eliminate the white background to have the lines only and I color them in the end. Nothing fancy.

No. If you put the lineart in Multiply then you won't be able to colour it. Do this:
1) Levels: play with the levels to make everything look cleaner. Mode has to be RGB.
2)Go to channels--> Load channels as selection.
3)erase
4)Block transparent pixels on the lineart layer.
5) fill with black (or any colour you like)
Done.
