Wow! This reminds me of a favorite part of my childhood!
I lived with my cousins that where both avid tabletop gamers and of course, chess players. I think I spent days in front of a chessboard, opposite to my older cousin and of course, he'd beat me every time!
As for critique, I think you should simply change the hot-air balloons. Why crowd them all around the tree? Spread them all over the sky! I think they add wonderful spots of color on that blue!

same here i love playing chess when I was a kid, me and my father always have a match after my school homework is done, in a manner he always beat me though, he is tough my only chance was a stalemate! lols

Ah those dads! Mine loves chess as well. But I tried to avoid playing with him, because he beat me too fast and it wasn't any fun at all! Now he just plays Battle Chess on the PC.
You know what? It's been a long time since. Maybe I'll buy him a new chessboard and invite him to a match next time I see him!
