Description
My entry for the Splice contest.Meet Beacon.
He's a combination of octopus and chimpanzee.
This creature was created to be a revolution in service and rescue animals. Highly intelligent, strong, dexterous and capable of squeezing through very tight spaces with ease. Excellent for locating the trapped/injured in rescue missions that prove very difficult for rescue dogs, humans and remote cameras to reach, such as collapsed buildings and mine shafts. He is capable of inflicting far worse injuries than an octopus or chimp could inflict as separate entities, but he is generally of a helpful, insatiably curious temperament, making him an ideal helper animal well worth the risk of enlisting the help of, when properly trained.
As you can see Beacon can be quite a character. He loves oatmeal cookies for instance, and when missing from his containment (he is an amazing escape-artist), he's usually found in the lab lounge, munching away on them. Then when he's returned to his enclosure, minus his cookies, he can throw a sizable fit.

This looks great!
In my eyes it doesn't looks more like a ape-octopus, more like a high evolved land climbing octopus!
I really like your design!!!

Who would've thought an octopus and a chimpanzee spliced together could be so cute? That's a really neat design and I hope you win! I love the sketch of him curled up and hiding in his tentacles. X3

Thank you.
I've always admired the curious nature, intelligence and physical ability of both animals. The cute factor was a very fortunate side effect. XD

Thanks. This was done more to cheer up my beloved, and to take a breather from what I was currently working on (Like a meditation). While wining some of those prizes would have been nice, I was more bothered that most of the entries I really liked didn't make it into the top 25. *shrugs*

Hat's off for that design good sir. The combination of chimp and octopus would also give it great reasoning ability for an animal, both helping it free trapped/injured people and for cunning tricks when it's angered.

Thank you. ^_^
When I was creating his look, his emotions, mannerisms and movement stuck out the most in my mind, so I felt inclined to include several different shots of him.

Any creature who likes oatmeal cookies cannot be all bad. Oatmeal Raisin cookies would mean that he is a divine creature, close to godliness.
Oreos would mean he's a Martian.

Niceee!! Very strong desing.
As a bit of a crit: I think it could use a bit more contrast in it's face. Maybe a bit darker eyes.

Thanks.
Sure, I'm always open to some constructive criticism.
So, do you mean actual darker colored eyes...?
Or darker shadows/skin around the eyes...?

Welcome back to The Land of the Living, JM!
Wonderful design, I love both the neat sketches and the finished coloured one. I also admire an artist who can take two seemingly contrasting animals and blend them so well together and with a great background story to boot. Good luck in the contest!

Fantastic design - I like how you have all the sketches to show different moods and angles. I particularily love the far right two. You made an unlikely combination look almost natural and believable! Nice job

Very kind of you. Thank you.
Beacon's expressions and mannerisms are what stuck out to me most when I imagined him. It's what pulled his design together for me, so I felt inclined to include the different variations.

Adding: Also, the more I think on it, it was probably intentional on the scientists' part to make Beacon so damn adorable. That way, he won't scare the people he's rescuing! (He'd also require strength that great in order to get to places where people might be trapped, I'm sure.)

If he weren't rotting my teeth, I'd be running for cover. The statement "Man, did they not know what they were toying with" is a double-edged one--not only did they not realize the absolute brute strength and escapism that such a creature would have, but they did not realize that the sheer tooth-rotting adorableness it would also gain through splicing would grant it a deceptively harmless demeanor. It's a good thing he's difficult to enrage when he's trained; in real life, I'm sure they'd have a pit bull rep for being dangerous to people who don't know how to act around them. (Or maybe that's even an added perk to the service animal position--boasting incredible strength to defend their human.)
