One reason I love space: It's got a lot of black, white, and blue colors. (And the occasional reds and green and such, but whatever.)

Haha indeed it does!
Far more colour than we realise just by looking up

I liked the first 60 seconds, after that the effects looked artificial and the music became repetitive. I also think that you should have framed the dancing scenes wider, so the dancer's head and hands weren't cut off from time to time. I suppose you tried to fit your visuals to the music, unfortunately that led to a rather tedious dancing part which took away from the energy of the video.
I definitely see potential there, which is why I suggest a recut.

Hahaha! I literally just wrote a response on how I was happy no one has criticised the VFX yet lol!
Haha... Spoke to soon :S
Anyway... I do know what you mean. Was one of my first major experiments with Trapcode Particular. I think for the level i was at I was happy with it.
Yeh I wish I had more room for the dancer to, I was restricted to the smallest of studios at the University... Never mind.
I filmed it with a very good idea of what I wanted to achieve but this version is the result from many additions added to the final edit (for many different reasons) instead of going back into the project file!
The music was actually composed last as I originally used a track I didn't have the copy right to. So the Composer was asked to emulate something else (which can be restricting).
I am glad you see potential, however i doubt I will re-cut as I have moved on (I created this over a year ago for my MA).
But thanks again, really appreciate all the feed back I have got so far. Going to upload my Sci-fi film I made for my final project on my MA... Dreading it though because of all the different opinions in the world. but I'll be brave as all these comments are so useful for my development

Very cool! Maybe a little slow at some parts but very nice and well done.

Yeh, It's pace seems to be its main criticism... It's intended though, but I don't mind people not liking that. TBH the VFX was the main point of it when I created it as part of my MA, and as of yet know one has criticised it :S
... So I can expect the next comment to do that

Haha thats ace!
Firstly I actually hadn't heard that track, so I just watched the official video... BLEW MY MIND! It's amazing!
Second my video was actually originally cut to a song called 'Battlestar Sonatica' by Bear McCrary because this was a student piece. So I got my cousin to compose music to it so i could put the video online.
Anyway thanks again for it all

Stunning visuals and the concept of creation and inspiration are linked smoothly, although I agree with the first comment being a bit too long
can I have the soundtrack btw? I like that

Hey.
Thanks, glad you liked it.
I agree in someways and then again I also am happy with my final edit.
I wanted it to be long to show that going from the moment of inspiration to the creation is often not a quick thing.
It actually came from me creating the piece. I had it all planned out in my head etc. Filmed and then edited and did all the effects. Until two weeks before the dealing I scrapped it as I wasn't happy and not willing to hand in second best work (It was created as part of my masters degree). So I completely re edited it and re did 90% of the effects in less than 2 weeks :S
Anyway Thanks again

well its like, how long does it make to create a 30 second advertising? Inspiration must've been very long, but then the short execution leaves a more direct impact, but yeah I get what u mean.

JackShelbourn In reply to amidarosa [2011-02-02 18:41:17 +0000 UTC]
Yeh I know what you mean.
It's just down to the context of what the inspiration is and then what the creation is.
In this case its about a dancer, dancing to slow music.

what is the purpose behind this video? you have good scenes, but spend too long on one idea, the audience is going to be bored before you can get anywhere with them. we start in a field of stars, to a girl who is playing with water/starlight, then it explodes into a dandelion-esque star. what are you trying to say with this? is this a good representation of you? what does this say about you? are you a motion graphics person? the choice of color is almost dead, even for a galaxy full of stars. this isn't your best and you know it.
what should your piece say about you?
it should say hi, I'm jack shelbourn, badass extraordinaire, not, hi, this is me, watch it.
pop it
don't have the words slide on and off the screen, pop them
you've got a great skill at editing your sounds with your imagery. push it. push it harder. you have the tools, do it. this piece could be cut into 30 seconds and be extraordinarily amazing, if you cut it right, the audio pops in the right spaces, and the kinetic typography booms.
when your flower comes down, and turns into a piece of light, don't have it die slowly, no, have it pop out and say JACK SHELBOURN, I kick ass and you know it. I'm not an artist, I'm a work of art.
Try it, condense it down. You'll like it more. Don't fall in love with drawn out animations, fall in love with the magic that you can make. You don't need two and a half minutes to say you're unique. People are going to get bored. Thirty seconds, and you can blow people away if you remember to keep it simple, and keep it pretty.
Try it out.

Hey,
Firstly I am really sorry it has taken this long to respond. I honestly forgot and today it has been brought to my attention again :S
Firstly thanks for the comment, its great... Where to start?
I totally understand what youβre saying. I could explain why I created it etc and all that but i donβt think thatβs what youβre looking for in this comment.
Firstly, I agree i donβt think it is my best, but at the time it was and I still look back at it only a year and a few months on with fond thoughts and I simply wanted to share it.
As for the speed, it is designed to be slow. I wanted to show that having an idea and going about it isnβt always a quick thing and often can take a long time, and be a drawn out process. (I guess i really should have written more in the description but I wanted people to form their own ideas, such as βIs it snow, or falling starsβ etc.)
I really like the colour, I was experimenting at the time and I like the low saturation and cold feel... Itβs set in space...
Now on to the second paragraph. I totally agree. My work should shout that and that is what i am looking at in my latest works. (Although i intend to upload more work from my past, that probably will still not achieve this so please forgive those videos).
I was planning on making a feature film this summer, but this comment along with other things has made me rethink and I am going to put all my efforts into a much smaller project.
And again last paragraph, thanks loads for the great advice. I am probably going to leave this video as I am a firm believer of letting things lie and moving on. I.E abandoning shots not finishing them, as I will spend the rest of my life on this.
Anyway hope this replay is ok, and please ask away if you have any questions.
Thanks
Jack
P.S I may just put JACK SHELBOURN, I kick ass and you know it. I'm not an artist, I'm a work of art as my motto
