Description
"Bacon, bacon, pancakes!"Lets continue our Disney/Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary celebration with the groundbreaking series that helped Cartoon Network enter into their equivalent of the Disney Renaissance, and it features the adventures of a young boy and a shape-shifting dog in a bizarre fantasy world; Adventure Time.
The series follows the adventures of a fiery young boy with strong morals named Finn the Human, and his care-free best friend and adoptive brother Jake the Dog, who has magical powers to change shape and size at will.
Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, which was ravaged by a cataclysmic event known as the "Mushroom War", a nuclear war that destroyed civilization a thousand years before the series' events.
Throughout the series, Finn and Jake interact with major characters, including Princess Bubblegum, the sovereign of the Candy Kingdom and a sentient piece of gum; the Ice King, a menacing but largely misunderstood ice wizard; Marceline the Vampire Queen, a thousand-year-old vampire and rock music enthusiast; Lumpy Space Princess, a melodramatic and immature princess made out of "lumps"; BMO, a sentient video game console-shaped robot that lives with Finn and Jake; and Flame Princess, a flame elemental and ruler of the Fire Kingdom.
The writing is really solid and well thought out as it manages to be not only really funny and adventurous, but it can also be pretty action-packed, suspenseful, intense, dramatic, and emotional. And while it does start off more light-hearted, goofy, and weird, and it's all done very well. And as the show progresses, it becomes more dark, serious, and story-driven while still having light-hearted moments and the humor. On top of that, there's some great world-building and lore. However, it can be a bit bumpy and unfocused at times.
While there are a few bad episodes like "Dream of Love", the majority of them are incredibly strong and solid whether they be more comedic or serious like "Jake the Starchild", "Root Beer Guy", the "Fionna and Cake" episodes, "Death in Blossom", the "Stakes" saga, "The Monster", "You Forgot Your Floaties", "The Tower", "A Horse Named James Baxter", "Marceline's Closet", "Time Sandwich", the "Islands" saga, "Three Buckets", "Ocean of Fear", "Food Chain", "Evicted", the "Elements" saga, "Be More", "Is That You?", "Simon and Marcy", "Too Young", "Wake Up/Escape From the Citadel", "The Enchiridion", "Sons of Mars", "The Other Tarts", "Lemonhope", "Frost and Fire", "Thank You", "The Lich/Finn the Human/Jake the Dog", "It Came From the Nightosphere", "I Remember You", "What Was Missing", and the epic finale "Come Along With Me".
The show has a very solid sense of humor, and this does lead to some very funny and humorous moments and bits like the witty banter and dialogue between the characters, the funny situations they get into, the gags and slapstick, the adult jokes and innuendos, and even some, but not all, of the gross out humor.
The show also has a great amount of heart and drama, and it's thankfully very well handled. And this aspect is shown with the more tender moments and relationships between the characters, and some of their backstories.
The action scenes are a lot of fun, and while some of them can be goofy but still exciting like fighting off the Ice King, others can get pretty intense and suspenseful like fending off against the show's other villains and threats, and getting out of very tight spots.
The animation is pretty solid and does have an appealing look to it. The characters all have simple but solid designs, their movements can be very fluid and lively, the backgrounds are very well done, and there are some solid effects too.
The characters all manage to be pretty likable and funny enough that we want to follow them on their adventures, and they have some solid chemistry and character growth.
Finn is a very likable protagonist as he is very brave and does have a moral code that he does his best to follow. And while he can be pretty childish, he does grow and mature as a character and learns to become more serious, but also still holds on to his inner childlike adventurer.
Jake is a very lovable supporting character as while he can be very snarky and witty, he is a very good and loyal friend to Finn, and is more than willing to help him and his other friends.
The rest of the characters are also highly enjoyable and lovable, and they not only have some strong character traits, but they also have some very interesting and tragic backstories like the dainty but highly intelligent ruler of the Candy Kingdom, Princess Bubblegum, the laid-back Vampire Queen, Marceline, the very goofy but also tragic villain-turned-friend Ice King, a.k.a. Simon, the ambiguous BMO, the spoiled and self-centered Lumpy Space Princess, the fiery and feisty Flame Princess, the strange but very loyal Lady Rainicorn, Finn's deadbeat but also caring father Martin, the very buff but also timid Susan Strong, Ice King's silent and mischievous partner Gunter, and many more.
The villains our heroes encounter are usually pretty goofy like Ice King during his time as a villain, and the happy-intolerant Lemongrab, but there are some more serious, menacing, and competent villains they have to encounter like the sinister and cunning Lich, Bubblegum's vengeful uncle Gumbald, Ice King's resentful former fiance Betty Grof, the pompous charlatan King of Ooo, Marceline's extremely evil father Hunson, Finn's grass clone Fern, and the literal embodiment of chaos GOLB.
The voice acting is very strong as the voice actors all manage to deliver very solid performances like Jeremy Shada as Finn, John DiMaggio as Jake, Hynden Walch as Bubblegum, Olivia Olson as Marceline, Tom Kenny as Ice King, Pendleton Ward as Lumpy, Niki Yang as BMO and Rainicorn, Jessica DiCicco as Flame Princess, Stephen Root as Martin, Ron Perlman as the Lich, Fred Melamed as Gumbald, guest stars like George Takei, Matthew Broderick, Keith David, Donald Glover, Marina Sertis, Anne Heche, Weird Al Yankovic, Lucy Lawless, and many more.
The music provided by the show's composers is very well done as it really captures the light-hearted tone of the show, and there are also some pretty solidly written and performed songs.
Overall, this is a truly unique and remarkable series that is definetly worth checking out, and it's very good as this helped get Cartoon Network out of their slump from the late 2000's. But this would just be the beginning of this new era of success, and this wouldn't be the last time we would have adventures in the Land of Ooo.
