Description
In Trinidadian culture, the Jab Molassi (or Molasses Devil) is a carnival character that originated during the period of enslavement in Trinidad. African slaves covered themselves in molasses and acted like a devil in order to taunt their masters. From the days of European colonization into modern-day culture, the practice of disguising oneself in order to make light of dark situations has stuck, and the practice has passed down from our enslaved ancestors as they defiantly created a culture of their own that continues to be passed down. That is the legacy of the Jab Molassi.
