In Italy, Santa comes climbing up a rope latter to deliver a small gift or two. The major gift giving holiday for little kiddies is on the Epifinay (the day the Wisemen brought gifts to baby Jesus). The story goes that while the wiseman were on their journy following the bright star they ran into a witch named La Befana. They told her of the child king but she didn't travel with them because she was to busy. But on the Epifinay she felt the urge to go out and find the baby king. But as there was no longer a star to follow she wasn't sure who was baby jesus she she left little sweets for all good children in their stockings as she flew past on her broom and coal for the naughty children. Thus an ugly witch on a broom is the symbol of the holiday gift giving in Italy.This store at Piazza Novouna is called "The House of La Befana" and it sells various sizes of witches. Some even cackle and their eyes light up if you clap.
