Description American kestrel (if someone has a better ID please feel free, I will be happy to update as appropriate)
Taken in Fountain Colorado 19 February 2008
Canon 1D Mark III, EF 300mm 1:2.8 L IS USM with Extender 2x II f/8, 1/1250 ISO 400
A clear sunny day.

You will have to get really close to get an image that you are happy with. I’ve noticed that birds (even wild birds) get used to a person’s presence if you are around them enough so that may be what you have to do. I feed the birds in my area so they know me. That's how I get my humming bird pictures.

Tried that! Spent an hour around the Azorean Hawk and it kept flying another 100 meters ahead to the next branch or cable and all the time watching me suspiciously! Utterly fascinated by them!

It usually takes about three days for the birds in my area to start ignoring me. Perhaps they just need to get used to you for a while.

it might be a juvenile male, the adult tail feathers look like they are just coming in. females are all russet colored and the males have the blue like you have captured in your photo. (might be molting?)

(I'm not very good when it comes to birds of prey- but my boyfriend is a bird of prey freak- he can spot them anywhere!!!)
