Description Ok,here's the top view.If the piece wasn't so chunky i might have gotten away with the weld.Generally,welding onto the pipe is doable.For some reason i had better luck doing it on the anvil face,vs.a mandrell.

What's probably happening is the heat gets drawn out of the pipe into the madrel, reducing the amount of time you've got to set the weld. You could try heating the madrel, to just starting to glow or a high black heat, that will extend the amount of time to set the weld. Some smiths have a small anvil they'll put on the forge table next to the fire, which will be warmed by the fire for the same purpose. It'll be useless for anything else, but it's great for setting welds if your forge is sturdy enough for it.

Thanks,Nick-that's a good idea.Hoping that by next year i'll quit that forging at ambient temp.altogether-was -20F last night,a nuisance to have that extra factor in the deal.
