Description
This image I made for the title screen of my in-development game Randy's Crazy Mission! Basically, it's a game that's based on the 1983 video game crash. Its concept is like that of Wreck-It-Ralph. It takes place in the world of a bad Atari 2600 game during the 1983 video game crash. The in-universe game was made by a fictional candy company and is based on their cartoon commercials. Think something like that old Tootsie Pop ad. Non-video game brands did make 2600 games at the time after all. Ever heard of Coke's "Pepsi Invaders?".
You'll play as Randy, the brand's mascot and player character of their game, who'll go on his own crazy mission INDEPENDENT of the one made for his game, to gain appreciation from his family. See, in his game, there's a conflict that's happening while the game's sitting in a disappointed buyer's home. Also, the characters who live in the game are aware of the game industry and the then-current crash, which factors into the story. I'm not revealing how just yet though.
Remember, the in-universe game is based on 70s cartoon commercials. I decided to make the art style a blend of 2600 graphics and 70s-style animation, with an analog-style filter for authenticity. Sources of influence include stuff like Schoolhouse Rock! and the classic cartoon Tootsie Pop commercial.
The game will begin as exactly what it is in-universe, that being, well, bad, what people associate with games from the crash era. If you can tolerate beating the levels, the real game will begin. It's actual story will start after the game's put on the shelf. As the plot unfolds, you'll replay the levels (with a few more thrown in), but they'll be vastly improved. There'll also be gameplay nods to classic games added in. There will be story cutscenes and NPCs to talk to while replaying the levels. Actual music will play this time as well (oh, and I'm composing the soundtrack too).
