Description
The PLC, often reffered to, and known in Poland simply as "The Commonwealth", was long past her prime in 1750's. A series of costly wars throughout XVII century left the country devastated, mainly the Khmelnytsky Uprising (1648-1657), the Russo-Polish War (1654-1667), the Swedish Deluge (1655-1660) and the Polish-Ottoman War (1672-1676). With economy crumbling and military being only a shadow of former strength, The Commonwealth lost her status of a regional powerhouse, though through size alone still remained a country significant enough so that other empires would rival over the influence over the PLC.The Commonwealth at that time, despite some territorial losses, was still a territorially large country. Divided on two equal in rights parts - The Crown of (Kingdom of) Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the north we can also see a small Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, a remnant of the old Livonian Order turned into a secular, vassal state of The Crown back in XVI century. The PLC borders Swedish Livonia there, lost by the Commonwealth during the wars between Poland and Sweden. In the East the Russian Empire looms over weakened Poland, gaining more and more influence over the region. The Hetmanate included territories taken by Russia from the Commonwealth in 1667, and was a form of temporary Cossac authonomy. In the south Poland borders the Ottoman Empire and their vassals - the Principality of Moldova. To the West Poland borders the Habsburg Empire, future Empire of Austria, and the Kingdom of Prussia - once a vassal state to Poland, since the Deluge independent, and consolidated with Brandenburg, Prussia will become one of the major nails to the coffin for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the coming decades.
