Ask Movie Slate - Godzilla Month. Godzilla (2014)Today's Movie Slate is brought to you thanks to
You know me, I tend to keep the regular Movie Slate updates simple and straight forward. Not a lot of flashy things, just this silly horse, in her cinema, watching movies. Well that got thrown out the window with the last few weeks of updates, and so I went to the origins of what this blog was all about: Trying out different things. Shading and lighting a scene with just an old CRTV monitor took me into a weird trip down Google Images. You wouldn't expect there to be as many pictures of people posing in front of TVs like an Instagram version of "Poltergeist", but the plethora of examples for the lighting came through in the end result. Not sure about you guys, but I think it works out alright. Also Movie Slate holding up opera binoculars so Goji can watch the movie was pretty amusing to draw.
You gotta feel sorry for Gareth Edwards. He makes three big, huge movies with large ambitious scopes ("Monsters", "Godzilla (2014)" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"). He does good business on all of them, ranking over a billion and a half dollars in the box office, and all of a sudden people have forgotten about him. I want to think he just got tired of the way things are done with movies, but his sights are aimed so high it's like the projectile he launched into the air just came back down to explode right on his face.
Mmm? Why am I talking about Gareth Edwards instead of talking about "Godzilla (2014) " you're wondering? Well that's a very good question. I have no idea. I find it impossible to sepparate one from the other, to be honest with you. Say what you want about movie directors and their impact on making big Hollywood movies nowadays, but I feel like Edwards is one of the few who can still carry personality and a voice into his movies despite the interference of the studio suits and their pruning scissors. Every frame of this movie has his stamp on it, from the sweeping camera moves to the wide berth of space in almost every single frame, to the way he composes the image showing how small and insignificant the human race is compared to the grandiose drama around them.
I know this may sound like irony, and you're waiting for the punchline of me saying how the first half of this film is almost exclusively narrated through news broadcasts, but we don't give this movie enough credit for the way it builds itself up. Keeping the horror of the Mutos away from the viewer only makes them more horrifying and alien, while Godzilla is often kept close. That moment where he walks towards the bridge and literally just stops to look around without actively hurting the humans on it tells you more about his character than any of the endless bits of dialogue said by the rather flatlined characters. That is perhaps the biggest hurdle the movie has to overcome, the fact that the characters have the depth of a kiddie pool, but they do the job. They are likeable enough that we want to see them survive, and for what this movie is attempting that's all we could ask for. It actually took me several years that the husband and wife characters are played by The Maximoff twins from "Age of Ultron", which is both funny and weird when you think about it.
"Godzilla (2014)" only drags in its human character department, while serving a strong punch of cinema and masterful narrative that got unfairly crushed by those who were expecting a monster mash. Keeping to the model of the original to a fault, Gareth Edwards put his own seal of action and atmosphere, in what most likely will come to pass as either a career ender or a career starter. Whether or not it works it's entirely subjective, but there's no denying the craft and care put into making this movie feel huge.
I hope you guys enjoy the picture!

G: Hunh.
MS: I know, right? I mean, I get the intention, but the fight staging is still--
G: I remember this bit. Sneaky beggar.
MS: ...what.
G: Pony, you're forgetting. I was there. This was my fight. That guy tried to sucker punch me right in the gflirnik.
MS: The what.
G: The gfl-- right, you wouldn't have that organ. Not being a radiation breather. Kinda to the side on the evolutionary tree, but it's also an obvious development for those who do have high-rads in their respiratory systems.
MS: Uh...
G: Anyhow, he's trying to sucker me in here-- see? I was lucky to see it coming. Really lucky, almost had me. Heck, there were a few times I nearly--
MS: Well. Okay. So, why didn't they show us--
G: Oh, come on. If YOU were a TV cameraman near a throwdown like that, would YOU be that focused on keeping everything in frame? Or focus? Hell, I can't get a decent picture when I do a simple interview-- well, that's less the cameraman dodging for his life and more ambient radiation from my body screwing up the recording media, but...
MS: And the next thing I'm showing you is a Disney Movie, dammit.
G: Aw. But those are always so unrealistic.

My biggest problem was that Bryan Cranston's character was easily the most compelling (and the most well-acted) and he dies 30 minutes in.
And the scenes without him or giant monsters drags. Oh, they drag. I really wish Ford was a better character, but he's just...there.

Well, I would be more okay with the humans if they were more interesting. Like have more screen time for Serizawa and Graham instead of Ford Brody, who is essentially a piece of wood. Didn't care for him, or his wife, or his kid.
And of course making most of the fights during the night was not that good. Could barely see a thing.

Still wondering how Movie Slate got her hooves on a pair of opera glasses that big - did Torch loan them to her or something?
Also, it seems the more you drill down into the Godzilla movie franchise (at least the good movies), the more you realize THE MONSTERS AREN'T THE POINT OF THE MOVIE!
