I always thought Merlin was pretty hasty taking off to Bermuda because Arthur was happy about being a squire. It was simply a step up, however small, from his lowly position. Even though Merlin was right about Arthur being destined for greatness he didn't think Arthur would just jump from his lowly place right into whatever his destiny would ultimately be. I guess Disney just needed a way for him not to be around when Arthur pulled the sword from the stone.
