Two sides of the same coin. This is how they met. This is how two of the word's greatest detectives have came across. Batman: The Dark Knight. Gotham's ultimate savior. L: The Prodegy, The man who would confront Kira. These two detectives are arguably the best in modern fiction. They opperate in the shadows, taking on villains and crazed criminals that seek to do harm, in essence they operate in a dark and gray world.

In L's early days, he knew from the beginning, that he would be an unsanctioned successor to the Batman's mission. Though his methods were not far from what L is trying to achieve, Batman knew that there was an even blacker darkness compared to his. This was before the events of The Killing Joke and Death Note that Batman knew that L should be kept an eye on. For years L followed Batman's career as The Dark Knight. He took every note in how the Caped Crusader functioned. His flaws and his weaknesses. His many habits associated with his humanity such as his pension for visiting Crime Alley. L was able to deduce that Bruce Wayne was Batman, having considered the wealth, the body build, and the motive. But in the end, L is not motivated to usurp the Dark Knight, nor gain his approval, but rather he wants Batman to know that he will be operating in the same capacity for the sake of Justice. In this regard, Batman gives L his respect, but warns him if he should snap, and fall to darker impulses, he only said this "I'm coming for you."
