Eleanor Blake was born in 1880 in Liverpool, England, to a family of shipbuilders. Her father and grandfather had both been involved in the industry, and her mother was a skilled seamstress who worked on ships' interiors. From a young age, Eleanor was fascinated by the sea and the ships her family produced, spending much of her childhood exploring the docks and watching the ships come and go.

Eleanor was determined to follow in her family's footsteps and become a shipbuilder. She studied engineering and naval architecture at university, excelling in her classes and impressing her professors with her skill and dedication. After graduation she applied to work on the steam ships that sailed the waters between Liverpool and New York, starting out as a junior engineer and working her way up the ranks.

When Captain Benjamin Harper was assigned to the steam ship on which Eleanor worked, he was impressed by her skills and her quick thinking. He recognized her potential and offered her the position of First Officer.
