beautiful work! lovely details and realistic expressions! however i must say that the rock they're standing on seems a bit blurry

Thanks. The rock is blurry because it's actually snow...

Wow, I'm impressed! Such neat details. Also, that short tutorial was very helpful, I'll be sure to remember those tips if/when I try doing digital art for real.

Thanks. Don't forget every time you do it, it's 'for real'.

I can not tell you just how much I adore this piece of art @3@... thank you so much for making such a beautiful image.. It baffles me how you color so well! O____O could you possibly do a tutorial on how you color?

Thanks, glad you like it. I'll try get time to do a tutorial one day. There's no real secret. I drew the top figure in pencil, scanned it, and drew the other two digitally. I painted it mostly like you would do a normal painting, keeping the original drawing/plan on a bottom layer. Try to keep minimal layers - using only a few layers makes you braver. Keep the layers logical - sky at the back, then background buildings, then snow/foreground, then figures. I usually have layers on top and inbetween for detail and miscellaneous work. Using masks is also useful if you want to try out things and not permanently destroy part of a painting. Block in the area you want to work on with a medium-dark base colour. I then did all the armour highlights, then all the shadows. I used a small number of custom brushes which you can download an older version of off my website (links page). Go slowly, always keep the direction and strength of the light source(s) in mind, and THINK about what you are doing at all times - don't make random paint marks - each mark you make serves a purpose. Also keep in mind your picture's most important part (here, the soldiers), and make sure the contrasts and colours enhance that - for example, when I was almost finished, I use a few layer effects to knock the background back so it didn't interfere with the main figures. anyway, that's my little advice for a painting of this style and detail for now.

Reading this serious made me smile xD
Thank you for the tips @3@, not too sure how layer masks work, but its definitely something I'm willing to figure out.
I think it all boils down to me needing to learn photoshop better, lmfao, but still, I think you just gave me a better idea of how to convey paintings. Thanks a lot! >3< (goes to download the custom brushes)

No problem. Sit down with Photoshop and investigate every small icon etc in front of you, go through the preferences, etc. It's easy to miss out on important features by not spending time doing this. Another thing I forgot to mention is, get a Wacom drawing tablet. It's the ONLY way to work digitally. And don't get a cheap brand tablet, save up and get a proper Wacom, even a small one is fine. Good luck...

Oh yes! I have the tablet, I absolutely adore those things, they're unimaginably helpful @3@... But yeah, I usually find out the interface bit by bit from some tutorials I look up online to do certain things in photoshop... Getting closer to learning all of it with everything I read xD
