Description

A research vessel by design, the S.R.S. Torchbearer is essentially a craft designed to "take a closer closer look" at more distant planets that have recently been judged as survivable (lifebearing class C and up). The cockpit and quarters module, a commonly used model, has a single shuttle dock covered by the I.E.S. dome underneath. The dome ensures that the shuttle's integrity is maintained while it is inactive, even on long journeys.

Because the C.&Q. is a multipurpose model, it's sleek atmosphere travel friendly design contrasts with the more shielded multi-chamber laboratory behind it. Individual E.M.U.s on the hull side of each of the 40 cells ensures that distinct internal environments can be maintained for all of them, though usually the chambers remained linked, and one unit handles ten adjacent chambers. This non-dependency is reported to be especially useful in a contamination emergency.

Behind the laboratory, there is the daisy-wheel like array of the 40 power modules. It is a semi-common misconception that each of these is meant to power one laboratory cell. Although this is technically possible, critical ship functions would of course not be maintainable, and the laboratory would likely overheat from the power dissipation. The modules also serve as radiators for the ship, and contain the bulk of its reserve power supply.

The built in cargo area on the ship is quite small, as the docking bay is designed to accept an array of up to six S.C.D.S. units, which per design function as additional cargo area while in use. The ship originally had a small universal docking bay which was fully accessible by leaving two of the initial five cross-arranged docking ports unoccupied, but this was later changed to the present design.

Behind the cargo area lies a machinery area, mainly dedicated to engine management and the ship's emergency reserve power supply.

The ship is equipped with three T.M.P.S. engines, capable of propelling it at about 2.93 AU/M at max warp.

The S.R.S. Torchbearer is currently under ownership of Quest Industries, its original manufacturer. It is registered in the United States as such.
