Description JPLEGACY's ILLUSTRATE THE NOVEL CONTEST
MAGNIFY THIS FOR THE DETAILS, TO SEE THE FULL EFFECT FROM THE EYES OF THE ADULT REX TO THE EYES OF DODGSON trust me i spared no expense hehe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Description of Entry: I have drawn Dodgson’s last moments as he becomes the baby rexes’ first hunted meal as the mother watches overhead, I’ve drawn to the fullest of my capabilities the descriptions Crichton wrote of this dreadful but well deserved death scene, like Malcolm said in the book “There is a God’ referring to Dodgson getting what he deserves, The scene is becoming alive through the very page from the book that describes it, and then I added a border with the simple TREX skeleton from the book cover I didn’t want to add any reference to the movies so I kept it just as the books would be…I hope you enjoy this as much I did making It…

This overall took about 10hrs+and maybe more because I’ve been working on it since the contest was announced the amount of detail I’ve put in counts for the amount of time

Michael Crichton’s Descriptions in The Lost World Book:

Lewis Dodgson: 45yrs old, reddish skin, balding , baby faced, khaki safari outfit, boots, clothes full of mud and torn, fingers are full of ragged flesh from Compy bites

Adult Tyrannosaurus Rex: Mottled red and brownish skin, leathery skin, dark red color like blood,

Baby rexes: size of turkeys, short snouts, large heads, very big eyes, covered in red fluffy down feathers, scraggly look, a ring of pale white down feathers that circle around the neck, pale brown color, one has aluminum foil on its left leg

The scene in the book that I picked: pages 387-388 Titled EXIT
Exit
Lewis Dodgson fell.
Tumbling through the air he dropped from the mouth of the tyrannosaur, and landed hard on an earthen
slope. The breath was knocked out of him, his head slammed down, and he was dizzy for a moment. He
opened his eyes, and saw a sloping bank of dried mud. He smelled a sour odor of decay. And then he heard
a sound that chilled him: it was a high-pitched squeaking.
He got up on one elbow, and saw he was in the tyrannosaur nest. The sloping mound of dried mud was
all around him. Now there were three infants here, including one with a piece of aluminum wrapped
around its leg. The infants were squeaking with excitement as they toddled to-ward him.
Dodgson scrambled to his feet, unsure of what to do. The other adult tyrannosaur was on the far side of
the nest, purring and snorting. The one that had brought him was standing over him.
Dodgson watched the babies moving toward him, with their downy necks and their sharp little jaws.
And then he turned to run. In an instant, the big adult brought his head down, knocking Dodgson over.
Then the tyrannosaur raised its head again, and waited. Watching.
What the hell is going on? Dodgson thought. Cautiously, he got to his feet again. And again, he was
knocked down. The infants squeaked and came closer. He saw that their bodies were covered in bits of
flesh and excrement. He could smell them. He got up on all fours, and began crawling away.
Something grabbed his leg, holding him. He looked back and saw that his leg was in the jaws of the
tyrannosaur. The big animal held it gently for a moment. Then it bit down decisively. The bones snapped
and crunched.
Dodgson screamed in pain. He could no longer move. He could no longer do anything but scream. The
babies toddled forward eagerly. For a few seconds they kept their distance, heads darting forward to take
quick bites. But then, when Dodgson did not move away, one hopped up on his leg, and began to bite at
the bleeding flesh. The second jumped on his crotch, and pecked with razor-sharp jaws at his waist.
The third came right alongside his face, and with a single snap bit into his cheek. Dodgson howled. He
saw the baby eating the flesh of his own face. His blood was dripping down its jaws. The baby threw its
head back and swallowed the cheek, and then turned, opened its jaws again, and closed over Dodgson's
neck.

Really dynamic, awe inspiring work. Were I on the panel, you would have gotten my vote. The only downside is the bunny hands on the dinosaurs, but I suppose I can let that slide considering it's Jurassic Park fanart and everything else is so good.

Hahahaha! One of my favorite scenes! I disliked him oh-so-much. I always wished he'd been in the movie, though. It would have been a logical followup to the first one.

Yes! Not to mention his overall intentions and his general attitude toward animals - his whole spiel about using dinos as test subjects because people won't let him get away with using cats and dogs. And pushing Sarah out of the boat - haha, he got what was coming to him.

Blayze-EmberScales In reply to ??? [2011-11-11 21:42:58 +0000 UTC]

Holy crap, this is amazing!!! O.O Including the page from the book was an awesome detail to add! My only two critiques are the scale of the baby rexes, and the feathers. I know raptors may or may not have had feathers, but tyrannosaurs were definitely reptilian. Still, I must say again, this is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!! <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

triggamafia In reply to Blayze-EmberScales [2011-11-12 18:34:38 +0000 UTC]

Well, according to phylogeny, T. rex was either feathered partially, or it had a lot of leathery skin (akin to the skin of Oscar the parrot). Since it's ancestors were feathered, and many other advanced coelurosaurs were feathered, then Rex has a higher chance of being feathered. And most of the places that weren't feathered that used to be feathered in it's ancestors would be left with skin, instead of scales. There is skin impressions on the underside of the tail that has scales on it, but that is also the least likely area for feathers to have been. And saying raptors may or may not have been feathered is being ignorant. Anything in maniraptora was feathered almost COMPLETELY. Raptors were feathered from the snout to the tip of the tail. They also had wing feathers going from the arm to the end of the 2nd finger. And their legs were feathered too. Some even had feathers down to the feet with wind feathers on it too (see Microraptor and Xiaotingia). There are many impressions showing whole body feathers on raptors so saying otherwise is being deluded to science. Stop living in the 90s.

Blayze-EmberScales In reply to triggamafia [2011-11-12 21:33:12 +0000 UTC]

Okay, thanks for taking that way too far. I only say that raptors may not have been feathered because I'm in denial and think scales are way cooler. XP As far as tyrannosaurs go, the last I read (several years ago), I remember there being some debate over scales versus skin, but it did mention that the bone structure of raptors was much more similar to birds, and the bone structure of a tyrannosaur was more similar to other large reptiles. I must say though, that's the longest rant I've ever heard from someone getting mad at me for liking scales. Congratulations.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

triggamafia In reply to Blayze-EmberScales [2011-11-13 04:03:45 +0000 UTC]

Je ne meme pas fache. Scales are overrated, and I have no idea what debate you're talking about, but it must've been a creationist one if they spread that kind of lie. And how can a Tyrannosaur skeleton be more similar to a sprawled, quadruped reptile, as opposed to a biped, hollow-boned bird? And I'm not judging you for liking scales, I'm judging you for passing it as scientific fact when it's not.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Blayze-EmberScales In reply to triggamafia [2011-11-13 23:25:53 +0000 UTC]

I didn't pass anything as scientific fact that I didn't have good reason, in my mind, to do so. I'm sorry my opinions offend you. As for the skeletons, it was talking about the shape of the pelvic bone, I believe. It was quite some time ago so I don't remember most of the details.
