Description Still digging through what little unposted art I have on my flash drive, and I found this Looney Tunes group shot from a couple of years ago. I drew this around the time when Space Jam was just starting to re-emerge in the public consciousness as some sort of cult classic film, and since the Looney Tunes are obviously so near and dear to me, I kicked around the idea of doing a "fix fic" of sorts for the movie. This would have been part of the promo image for it. But of course, I've never had time to work on any of my elaborate fanfiction ideas, so this one fell by the wayside pretty quickly.

I have a real love-hate relationship with Space Jam. On the one hand, it was a major cinematic experience for my nine year old self in 1996. On the other hand, it's probably one of the dumbest Looney Tunes projects ever made. But on the other other hand, watching it again as an adult, it's so unrelenting in its stupidity that it actually becomes enjoyably bad. It's such a perfect snapshot of mid-90s corporate idiocy - "Hey, you know those Nike commercials with Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny that everyone liked? Let's make a movie out of those! With aliens!" It's a train wreck that you can't help looking at, even though you know you're going to regret it as soon as you do.

Good thing I checked my messages; this piece was soon added to my faves.

Space Jam never really sparked my interests.Β  I was never really into basketball (despite the town I grew up in), the whole concept just feel kinda cheesy to me (even as a kid), and if I'm going to be completely honest, I never liked that song, which still makes me twitch and cringe whenever I hear even part of it.

....Although I did enjoy some of the Lola segments in the DC Looney Tunes comic books.

Yeah, just add the movie and the impact on the Looney Tunes franchise to the list of things that result in my Love-Hate relationship with Warner Brothers.

It's a guilty pleasure for me. Lots of good things about the animation, lots of bad things about the story and characters. And needless to say the Looney Tunes Show Lola is way better.

Plus, the Looney Tunes have probably never looked or moved better before this.Β

... Warner Bros is reviving the Air Jordan brand of sneakers now.Β  But they're only doing the minimal marketing for it.

It's made for lulz.Β  It's for showing your kids on the suburban DVD player while you make the seasonal vacation to Vermont resorts.Β  I still like it by not taking too much of it to heart.

I'm in the minority, then, as I loved both Space Jam and Back in Action. I don't think it was Back in Action that killed the Looney Tunes so much as it is the censors deeming a lot of their cartoons as being inappropriate for children. Can't have guns or cartoon violence on the screen, after all.

Old or new, it's still a treat to see more LT arts from you once in a while

As for Space Jam itself...leave us not get too caught up in that

It's kinda sad that in a movie with the Looney Tunes as the star attractions, the funniest part is Bill Murray.

Still, it had one helluva soundtrack.

I have a love-hate relationship with this movie as well, but for different reasons.

Let's just say having it known during Middle School that I had a crush on Lola was a VERY large mistake on my part which defined the hardest times of my life.

Nowadays, I can just laugh at it knowing Space Jam was a bad movie to begin with.

And besides, Looney Tunes: Back in Action was much better. And this oncoming "Rabbits' Run" movie looks many fun.

See, everyone says Back in Action was better, but I actually find it far more annoying than Space Jam. If it had just been a pure Looney Tunes movie, I might have liked it better, but the live actors bring nothing at all to this story - Brendan Fraser is a mumbling putz who can't deliver a joke to save his life, Jenna Elfman has all the onscreen charisma of a kitchen sponge, and Steve Martin just makes me want to hang myself every second he's on screen.

Plus, Joe Dante keeps getting sidetracked and throwing in as many celebrity cameos and pop culture references as he can think of in lieu of actual humor, and it does nothing but distract the audience. And the story is an incomprehensible mess, the result of 27 rewrites by as many different screenwriters, so there's no tonal consistency at all. Watching this movie feels like being beaten up.

And also, it bombed in theaters so badly that it killed the Looney Tunes' careers, seemingly forever. It's 12 years later and these characters are still nowhere near as popular as they were for the 73 years before this movie came along and ruined everything. I can't ever truly forgive it for that.

...huh.

And here I thought Loonatics did all that.

Well, at least they still exist thanks to the new cartoons and the Rabbit's Run movie.

Loonatics was an outgrowth of Back in Action's failure. The movie bombed thanks to its utter lack of advertising and bad word of mouth, but Warner Bros. saw it nosedive at the box office and thought "Well, I guess people just aren't interested in the Looney Tunes anymore." The movie came out in 2003; one year later, the classic Looney Tunes were completely gone from Cartoon Network, and the year after that, we got Loonatics, WB's thoroughly misguided effort to try and make these characters more "relevant".

The Looney Tunes were entertainment staples for nearly three-quarters of a century before Warner Bros. actively took them away and tried to reinvent them. An entire generation has now grown up totally unfamiliar with the classic cartoons, recognizing these characters only in their angular, cynical, mediocre-at-best Looney Tunes Show incarnations. WB seems to be going out of their way to do everything with these characters except putting the classics back into heavy rotation - they've tried sitcoms, action shows, DTV movies, CGI cartoons, and none of it has succeeded, because they keep having to reinvent and reintroduce these characters all over again. It's like they want to keep the characters alive, but they don't want anyone knowing where they came from. As if they're ashamed of the classic cartoons, evenΒ  though people loved them for decades. And they'd still love them, if only Warner Bros. would let people see them again.

I don't know if it helps, but Cartoon Network still runs the old cartoons... sometimes. When that timeslot isn't taken up by the billionth re-run of Tom and Jerry's entire direct-to-DVD oeuvre; seriously, does Ted Turner have some decree that as long as Cartoon Network exists there must ALWAYS be some form of Tom and Jerry airing?

It's weird that Fraser's so bad in that. He's a much better actor usually. Must have been the direction.
