Description
People criticized Joel earlier in this story, calling him a snob and a jerk for dismissing MC Hammer as crap. But as a music geek, and a firm believer in the creative possibilities of music, Joel really is not the kind of person who would be a Hammer fan. Hammer came under a lot of criticism in 1990 for just slapping his boastful lyrics over mostly unaltered samples from other artists’ songs. That’s definitely the kind of thing that would get under Joel’s skin – he likes his music to be innovative and clever, not derivative and hacky. (And also, look at the guy's pants. I mean, c'mon.)Related content

And Coolio ripped off Stevie Wonder when making the greatest rap song of all time, make it stand on it's own, your point being?

Pfft, rap isn't even music at ALL, at least no rap I've heard in a long long time.
Ffs, for something to be music, there need to be, you know...NOTES involved. There needs to be a melody.

I get Joel's thoughts on Hammer ripping off other people's music but let's face it. Most rappers do that I liked MC Hammer as a kid because he was the only rapper I knew of at the time not doing gangster rap. I took what I could find. Those pants were crazy though XD

Public Enemy wasn't gangster. They were kind of anti-gangster before gangster was a thing. Well, it was more that they railed against the culture that allowed what would become gangster to come into being.

I suggest you look up some of their music, then.

may do that. Was never a serious follower of rap or hip hop (I'm like, the only black guy who doesn't like rap or hip hop) so they probably just flew past my radar

Both Joel and Katy didn't come off as a 100% likeable in this story arc, but that mostly because I never followed the music scene that well, so I can't take either side.
However Joel won out in the end because MC Hammer is indeed a hack. I only know one song of his (Can't Touch This), which is just a rip-off of Rick Jame's "Super Freak".

I think that's a good thing. It means Jesse's less afraid to not always sympathize with our protagonists.

I'm going to be a bit blunt here, some of his stuff with Joel interacting with others has been DANGEROUSLY close to "Strawman-and-Eyeroll" territory. So this appearance of a snobbish streak is a refreshing change. It makes him a less bland character, too.

Joke's on Katy. Hammer won't have another hit ever. And his music was hip-hop, not rap.

that is always such a cop out argument that i hear from too many people. "Your just jealous that you will never be as famous as HE is"
... ha, ha

This actually sums up a lot of the attitudes regarding pop music of 1990. I'm firmly on Joel's side (as I was back then), but both sides of the debate are valid. And the issue hasn't gone away 20+ years later.

If he wanted to listen to something "innovative and clever" he shold try listening to Danny Elfman's score for Tim Button's Batman like I had around that time. Now that's what I call cool..

I love your expressions in this one. And I think Joel has won this day... for now.
