Description The hurricane crossover event that occurred as part of FOX's Animation Domination this past Sunday night really rejiggered my interest in the world of "Family Guy", "American Dad", and "The Cleveland Show". Call it the MacFarlaneverse, if you will. I've been watching a lot of all three shows lately (thank you, Netflix), and despite the clamoring I hear from most detractors of Seth MacFarlane's work, I can say with certainty that they are not all just the same show dolled up three different ways. However, I'll concede there is one striking similarity - the Griffins, the Smiths, and the Tubbs-Browns all have teenage daughters who get little to no screen time per episode.

Meg shows up sparingly and just to be the butt of somebody's joke. Hayley goes entire episodes without even appearing. And Roberta's lucky if anybody even remembers she exists. As a champion of strong female characters in contemporary animation, it bugs me to see girls with so much potential get tossed to the corner of their respective writers' rooms. I think if these gals ever hung out together, they'd have quite a bit to say about their lots in life.

The show makes fun of racism (not always in the cleverest way, admittedly), but I've never seen it be out-and-out racist before.

Calling it not clever is putting it mildly. All they do is put a blatant stereotype onscreen and...that's it, that's the joke. I'm sorry, but it can only happen so many times before it ceases to be "ironic". They're just using the irony as an excuse to laugh at the likes of blackface. It couldn't be more obvious at this point.

I still haven't seen many post-renewal episodes, and the ones I have seen didn't have many overt racial stereotypes in 'em. Maybe I just haven't seen the worst of it yet.

It's gotten pretty bad. Every cutaway (and I mean every) from the last two episodes has been built around a stereotype.

We each have a different opinion. *holds up a glass of wine* Here's to Family Guy's eventual cancellation.

Up until the "resolve" of the episode, I was really surprised Meg tore into EVERYONE in the family and while I was pissed about why they decided to reinforce the status quo, at least she seemed to come out stronger from it.

Mixed feelings, but more good than bad I suppose.

As a fellow freedom fighter, I share your disdain. That's why I write strong female leads (including one fictional girl who is an actual sniper!).

Agreed, there seems to be this weird 'girls aren't/can't be funny' thing going on in contemporary comedy.

Only in Fox animation. Liz Lemon and Leslie Knope would disagree with you.
