About pixel evolution

This picture will give you an idea of how I came up with the lowest resolution that I could render a sci-fi figure.
I wanted to simply make a figure that would be the smallest, and the lowest possible resolution, yet be still recognizable as a Warhammer 40k space marine.
And I wanted to be able to render the maximum number of figures tying-up the minimal amount of printed sheets, disc space, and memory etc.
It started with the eyes.  I knew that there should be at least one pixel between each eye on a face.  (Obviously, I could not use a single pixel for the entire figure)
The two figures in the center met that eye spec. but the extremities and helmets did not quite have the resolution or minimum details that I was shooting for.
The first seven on the left do not even remotely resemble humanity.   The ones on the right had the minimum resolution (and correct symmetry) to use as a base unit for low-resolution accessories and gear (such as belt, backpack, etc.),  and had the one pixel standard between each eye.  I arbitrarily set the height and width (initially) to 50 x 50 pix. (or roughly 1 cm square).  This would be a tidy dimension that could be easily rendered, replicated, colored, rotated, picked or placed without complications.  I was toying around with this idea back in the late 1980's during the age of MacIntosh Paint, and "Clip Art" (long before Photoshop came on the scene).
