Description
for the love of knowledge and wisdom-----
Nikon D80 + 50mm F1.8. High ISO due to low lighting. An apple with a pi carved on it on some string was hung on top of a small math book on dark carpeting. A flashlight was used for lighting to cast a shadow onto the apple (not sure if I like the lighting but it was the only way to get a clean shadow given my limitations with lighting equipment.) The circular shadow appears as a heart due to the page indent and angle. GIMP for post editing. Brightened slightly. Added transparent blue layer.
-----
Cliche but I've always wanted to try it
Update 5/8/10 - I'm not sure why some people keep interpreting this as being Twilight or Death Note related

This is a really cool idea, I couldn't help but attempt to mimic it myself, didn't turn out too well though.

I hate math, but I love learning. This is a very well done photo, and I don't think it's cliche at all, because of the extras and meaning behind it. I will say this, as a thumbnail I thought it was a tribute to Twilight though! I thought the pi sign was fangs, which would have been a really creative thing from a Twilight fan, but I like this waaaaay better! =^^=

A very impressive photo. The lighting is great, and the pi symbol... Very cool. An instant favorite.

I find this extremely creative and well executed. Fantastic how well it turned out!
How do you wish you'd shot it differently? Perhaps if you had different equipment to work with?

I suppose I don't really like the odd glares on the apple. The white pages of the book essentially acted like reflectors and made the apple look odd in my opinion. I wanted a strong shadow but perhaps a softer shadow wouldn't be a bad trade-off for more even lighting.
Plus, quality can always be improved. This was shot at ISO 1600 but had there been better lighting, I could've lowered ISO without compromising shutter speed.

How is this cliche? I never would have imagined the shadow of an apple to be in the shape of a heart, even over a book. The nerd in me loves this!

you should search "book heart" right up there in the DeviantArt search. You will see why.

Oh.
Well, I haven't seen "book hearts" before this, so I wouldn't know. xD
Thanks for that, though. :3
