Description
(Model Alissa)In some movies, the time-line is broken. The end is previewed at the very beginning so you get intrigued to know how the characters ended up in that particular situation.
I tried to recreate such effect in my diptych: the top half depicts what happened at the end of the day.
How did Alissa deliberately jumped in the water while she had clearly expressed that she did not fancy getting in the waters?
Earlier in the day, Alissa had something terrible happen to her. She still showed up. She still showed up with beautiful energy and a smile on her face.
It was heartbreaking to see her suffering. But she worked hard on containing her feelings, she is a trooper. To quote her: "What does not kill me makes me stronger".
She was not really into the mood of getting photographed, so mid-afternoon, I took her to a natural preserve so we can explore the trails.
She knows all about hiking around town and I was surprised that she had not been to that particular park before.
We hiked for a while and reach the top of a 15ft waterfall with very calm water. She decided to go down in the fall to pick up some moss that she calls "baby tears".
That was half way down on the right side of the fall. She came back up and we sat for a bit with the feet in the current.
We sat and relaxed before deciding to go back down to the side off the fall to take some photos.
I was expecting Alissa to try to scare me pretending to fall... but I was quicker and meaner. I wrapped my camera strap around my wrist and let go of the camera.
How amusing to see her face believing that I really was dropping the camera. Once the camera stopped free-falling because of the strap... she looked at me.. "you really got me, I thought you really dropped it...".
Alissa had no plans to go in the water. She was very much scared of the leeches or snakes. But while I was trying to balance, holding on to a tree, she was so concentrating and ensuring I was not falling, that she lost balance, screamed for a couple of seconds and finally fell in the water.
I tried not to laugh because I had no idea if she had hurt herself during the fall, but believe me, it was so hilarious that I burst laughing. I am still laughing while writing the story.
I should also be telling that while she was in the water, both my feet lost grip. I was lucky to grab the rock above my head to stop slipping. I hit the camera on the rocks and almost smashed my face... That was not too funny anymore.
She came back to the edge and climbed up as quickly as she could. She was not very proud and actually completely spooked. I was not at my ease either.
We climbed back all the way to the top. We sat. She calmed down and we laughed. We chilled for a few minutes before she announced:
"You still want to do photos of me in the water? Because I got over being scared of that water. First I was in shock but we can do it now. I guess I am all wet already."
"Sure" I replied.
At that point it was as if there was no more camera. She was doing it for me. And I was just witnessing her being light-hearted and free-spirited.
How amusing and amazing to witness such a moment.
She smiled and smiled. I prepared the camera and brace myself for her jump.
When she stepped forward towards the void, she had decided to let it be.
She made the day a day to remember.
She made the day from bad to great.
She is such a trooper and she is quite awesome.

To me, the only thing better than telling a story is doing things in your life that create such stories. You can use the camera to document the situations & occurrences in your life, waiting for them to happen...but this is a fine example of using photography as an impetus to make them happen
This makes me happy for you, brother
