“Are you sure you don’t want me to help? Stay there with Knight and make sure nothing happens?” Lily said with a skeptical look as Mack stood by the gate leading to one of the seven pastures on the property.

“Yes Lily, if I don’t do it now, I never will. Someone has to train him, and I don’t want anyone else getting hurt.” Mack replied, shuffling her feet.

“But he almost killed you Mack, and you’re just going to jump on him like any normal horse?!?” Lily said slightly raising her voice and throwing her hands in the air.

“No Sam, I’m not going to ‘jump on him’. I’m going to thoroughly work him out and saddle him. If I think he is trustworthy, then I will consider getting on him.”

This was the conversation between Mack and Lily as Mack prepared to start her first training session with the red dun stallion everyone called ‘The Third Gunman’ or Gunner for short. This Vrangr stallion was the most wild Mack had ever seen. He would often destroy items just for amusement, and had a unique ability to destroy to most expensive thing within reach. A two days ago, he was tied alone in the barn tack room and was in the process of destroying a nice show bridle with a copper bit and copper decorative pieces. The two fillies, Queen and TD had wandered into the tack room, probably searching for treats. The stallion had snorted, reared up, and spit and kicked what was left of the bridle at the two foals. A large chunk of copper had hit Queen underneath her eye and the fillies spooked, charging out of tack room and cowered by Mack till the stallion was back in his pen. Needless to say Mack was furious.

Now Mack was finally ready to show the red dun his place on this ranch. She held a halter heavy with copper wire. She reached for the gate as Lily shook her head and walked away, probably to find Jake.

Mack closed the gate behind her with a loud click. Within moments, the red dun stallion galloped up and skidded to a halt right in front of her. He always seemed eager to do something, productive or destructive.

He pranced slightly as he hear the halter click on and instantly he became a different horse. His ears perked and he shook slightly, from excitement or nervousness, Mack couldn’t tell. She was reluctant to turn her back to the unpredictable stallion, so she led him from the shoulder. She open the gate and led him towards the arena, closing gate behind her with a soft click, so not to spook Gunner.

As she led him past the large turquoise barn, Jake and two fillies burst out of the barn doors. The mischievous fillies were probably up to no good again. Mack pulled slightly on the lead rope as Gunner tried to continue walking.

“Jake! Need any help!” Mack shouted as Jake scrambled around trying to catch the duo.

“No! No! I got it! You go do your thing!” he yelled back as he continued chasing the fillies.

Mack shook her head and continued on her way towards the arena. Gunner pranced and crow hopped multiple time on the short walked there. By the time Mack had reached the gate of the large dirt arena, she was almost done with the stallions attitude.

She opened the gate, lead in Gunner and latched the gate firmly. She grabbed the copper handled buggy whip she had set there earlier and strode out to the center of the arena, with gunner in tow. She stopped and let out some of the long lunge line Gunner was attached to. She had decided not to work him in the round pens because she wanted more space to try some new techniques.

Gunner reared slightly as he felt the rope slacken and began to gallop off to the end of his tether. But before he could reach it, his head was snapped back as Mack yanked the end of the long lead rope. Nothing but his head moved from the yank, but none the less, it had gotten his attention. He looked at the girl standing in the arena in a new light.

“How dare she challenge the King!!” He thought to himself. Gunner began to come towards her and show her who was really boss around here.

Mack seen Gunner begin to come towards her angrily, but she was ready. The end of the lunge line was capped with copper and she had expected this.

She swung the lunge line in warning, but Gunner payed no mind. She swung it further, this time making contact with his left flank. He reared and began to lope away from the bite of the copper as she continued to swing it slowly around.

Gunner seen Mack swinging the rope trying to scare him into going in a circle like she did the other horses, but he didn’t care. What was a rope going to do to him. He had already shown that he was stronger than rope.

But when the end of the rope touched his flank, things were different this time. The rope felt freezing and caused his skin to crawl. He reared and tried to run away from the weird feeling.

Mack held the rope fast as Gunner began to lope in a large circle, just like she had wanted him to. His head bobbed as he switched to a trot when he stopped fearing the copper. Mack allowed him to stay at a trot, observing his gait and his movement. Gunner had a higher action than most Vrangrs she had seen. She made a mental note to test him in dressage later.

She stopped spinning rope and let the end drop to ground with a thud. At this Gunner’s ears perked and he stopped. Mack gave a gentle tug on his lead and he began to walk towards her. When he stopped within a couple steps of her, she unclipped his lead rope.

Seeing that she had no hold on him Gunner squealed and galloped off, bucking. Mack clucked once, seeing what he would do. Nothing, not even a flick of the ear. Gunner continued to gallop around the arena wildly.

As Mack pondered how to get the stallions attention. She didn’t notice him sneaking up behind her. He silently put each foot down slowly, waiting to see if Mack would notice. It was part game, part hunting for him. He remembered hunting for fresh meat through the forest before she had caught him. The closer he got the quicker his heart beat and the more bloodlust cause him to shake.

Mack heard a faint crunch in sand behind her. She stood quietly to be sure it was what she thought it was. It was the sound of a hunting Vrangr. And she was being stalked.

She stood quietly for a couple seconds, quickly trying to come up with a plan. This could be a very bad if the hulking red dun was serious about preying on her. She knew from Knight that sometimes Vrangers play stalked and she had often let Knight out in the arena to play chase and play stalk. But this was not one of those times. She heard a suppressed puff of air and spun on her heel just in time to dodge a red blur. Within seconds Gunner had spun in a tight circle and was galloping straight at her like a steam locomotive.

This all seemed to happen in slow motion to Mack as the stallion raced towards her. She knew this time, there would be no Lumina or Knight to save her. She had to fend for herself.

At the last second, she ducked and rolled to the right, her hand brushing the buggy whip layin in the sand. Mack quickly stood and dodge yet another attack from the stallion. His teeth were bared and she could see the two sets of pointed canines in his mouth. As he rushed by her, Mack snapped her wrist and smacked his hindquarters harshly with copper tipped whip.

A loud crack sounded and Gunner arched his back and threw out his leg in an attempt to kick Mack. But he was too slow, Mack had already moved back to the center of the arena.

He swung around to try again but stopped suddenly. A sound pierced the air. It was quiet, but brought back a vivid memory of an odd bird he had found once in the vast forest that had been his home. The bird had a stirring call and he had chased it for days, trying to catch it.

But this time the call calm him and he cocked his head curiously in the direction of the girl.

Mack stood with both of her hand to her mouth in a cup fashion. It a desperate attempt to get the raging stallion’s attention, she had whistled like on of her high school friends had taught her. The effect was instant. Gunner stopped and stood with an odd look on his face and his head cocked to the side. He approached Mack again, but this time slow and cautious, with his head close to the ground in a submissive manner.

He reached Mack and allowed her to clip the lead back on his halter. She led him out of the arena and was surprised at the change in the stallion. He kept his head down low and didn’t prance or dance once.

Even more surprised she was when she reached the barn and found an black Dodge truck and SK leaning against it.
