Description This is an image I did for a tutorial on digital glazing effects for the second issue of Imagine Publishing's new magazine devoted to Corel's Painter software. I believe there is a pdf of the complete tutorial on their website,([link] , then look for the clone and glaze files in issue 2)

Hi there!
I would just like to say that this is one of the best works I have ever viewed on dA and that your talent is amazing. I hope you will get the recognition you deserve because you are obviously a gem and that needs to be rewarded. So I did the least I can do and suggested this work as a Daily Deviation. I am curious to see if it will get there!
Once more: Great work!

Greetings!

You're very welcome! And by the way, I am a Flemish myself, so this work is extra amazing to me. I thank you in name of the Belgians!

hey, glad you could stop by! To tell you the truth, I had no idea at the beginning of the assignment if I could pull anything of quality off, as it was a new technique. Relief was my dominant response about midway, once I saw some neat stuff happening.

glazing? gahhh! why in the HELL didnt I think of glazing??? WHY? *smacks head on desk* Is this for painter 9 or the higher version only? *hasn't upgraded beyond 9 yet*

... And...You DO realize that once I get this mag there WILL be notes by which to pester you, yes?

God I feel like a dork now. I've done underpainting with it but never thought to work up thin glazed layers as I would on canvas. I just ... well.. sort of 'globbed' it on and smoothed as I went. *sigh*

ha! I will gladly share my humble insights as needed. Yeah, thin layers are so easy to manipulate, you will be shocked. 9 is fine, as the necessary tools are there already. Cheers!

Okay Jeff, I just finished your tutorial and I have a few questions.. the whole cloner thing is all a bit murky to me..I fear I haven't really delved into Painter's other options aside from its olis, chalks and a its blenders so the photo thing is throwing me. How successful do you think this would be on a basic blocked oil work without a clone? Should I just stick to my 'dab and smooth' method and under paintings or give the glazing a try over a mostly refined painting to simulate a cloned source?

Lead me Buwana I'm all ears

Stacy, I used a clone source for the tutorial but had never done that before. We chose to do this in order to give folks who might not be able to draw convincing realism a way to get a satisfying result. I think a careful drawing followed by an equally careful underpainting, and then glazing on semi-opaque layers will get you where you want to go. (The cloning technique with an oil cloner can be used on an underpainting that needs harmonizing, but if you are careful in your underpainting, it is an unnecessary step. I sometimes use it when under time pressure, as the process becomes one of refining a speed painting with another speed painting, which can build lots of detail while remaining gestural and more fresh, if that makes sense)

Try soft light, gel, multiply, screen, colorize and hue layers set to maybe 10-20 percent opacity and take note of what they do alone and in combination. Play around a good bit and pick three that you get excited by that fulfill the functions of adding tone and value gradually, so your process becomes one of slowly working towards greater light effect, depth of feild, and color dynamics. Use them on a well-rendered underpainting with fully modeled form(something that looks pretty awesome by itself). It is a can't miss, in that you are building effects slowly, for one, and on separate layers (which you can fuss with to no end) to boot. I think you will need a few dedicated weeks to get a real sense of how this works, but once you start messing with these layers and layer opacity in general, you will instantly do a mental flip. Keep in touch with any questions, ok?

Ahhh excellent. I was hoping that would be the case. I have a few trials in mind to muck around with the whole idea to see how it goes. Sorry for posting it all here and hijacking your lovely painting with questions, my note kept timing out on me and it was something of a last resort.

Thanks for the reply as well! Should it work out for me, credit where it's due will be given, naturally...along with a link to your lovely here and the mag as well. Im -really- looking forward to this. It appears to produce the -one- quality in my work that has seemed most elusive. An honestly believable translucency. Hee.. Im all a twitter! Will let you know how it goes if you're interested. (via note even, should the DA gods be kind to me)

*waddles off to paint*
