Description
Beware the Jabberwock, my friend -the jaws that bite, the claws that catch -
Beware the Jug-Jug bird, and the verunious Vinder-snatch.
He took his Vorpal sword in hand,
longtime the nixsome vole he sought,
so rested he by the Tum-tum tree,
and stood awhile in thought.
And as in offish thought he stood,
the Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
came riffling through the tulgy wood,
and burbled as it came...
- Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass
(see also: The Cruxshadow's "Jabberwocky" - a niftily haunting song/reading of this scene, if you can find a copy...)
Attempted to draw a Jabberwocky for my mother's birthday, as it's her high school's mascot (and said school has fallen out of existence, making it difficult to find odd bits of mascot-imprinted nostalgia...). Consulted a dragon-anatomy textbook extensively for body and wing structure, augmented by what I remembered of her dusty old Girls Latin pennant.
The results are...interesting: a dragon-like creature with short wings, buck teeth, a grimacing grin, and a long, whip-like tail. Desperately wanted to color him in a reddish scheme, but Mom's mascot was black, so I stuck with that instead - even though I eventually opted not to give this to her, as her mascot turned out to be a belly-dragger with long wings and stubby legs. (Finally found a picture of the pennant....right AFTER I'd finished inking. Ain't that always the way?)
Microns on cardstock, colored in Photoshop and given a quickie Bryce background b/c it was late and I was tired.
