Description
Whoever put together the original did a brilliant job. I really loved it - so unique.Instructions for viewing MY job above: Look quickly at the whole thing (at once) - then exit immediately! If you look at the sections up close, you can see that I killed the poor thing.
I would LOVE to see someone do this justice. I think it has enormous potential.
Sorry for the wrinkled paper. Keep in mind, this was in my most primitive days. One mechanical pencil on printing paper.

No, I don't mind! Go ahead . . . that is going to be a BRILLIANT entry! And the contest sounds great - I would do something if I had the creativity.
Just one question . . . on the rules it says you have to do something original. So does using a reference photo still apply?
Other than that, best wishes! Have fun, it's an amazing photograph. I actually plan to do it again one day when I improve and can do it justice.

Yes - using a reference or stock still applies - they are just saying that it needs to be created for the contest specifically - you can't just enter some piece that you did before.
You are too hard on yourself - I was just in your gallery and you definitely have the talent to do something for the contest! I really like you piece "Come Back to Me"!! How could you think that you don't have talent??!!

Good work! I especially love the middle part; it looks incredibly fierce, with the veins on his forehead and the straining muscles in his neck. Just like he could jump off the page screaming any minute. I like it!

Your shading technique is great. Did you use many different hardnesses of graphite? I'm just starting to use graphite myself, and have a lot of trouble with shading properly. Your work looks great. You capture shadow very well. I especially like how, even though I believe you are aiming for realism, you've managed to create a somewhat abstract -- yet still immensely recognizable -- version of reality.

JenniferTheFirst In reply to lucid-state [2008-08-22 20:18:17 +0000 UTC]
1) Thank you
2) Oh I feel ridiculous . . . I have absolutely no technique whatsoever. I use a mechanical #2 pencil and plain printing paper. I've never taken classes and I can only WISH that I will be able to take some later on to learn better technique. That said, thank you SO much for your comment.
And as for the abstract aspect, all credit goes to whoever made the original picture. It was no originality of my own, but I appreciate that anyway.

lucid-state In reply to JenniferTheFirst [2008-08-22 22:12:47 +0000 UTC]
Mmmm, I would disagree. There is a certain style that realism uses, particularly in its shading technique, in order to achieve a proper skin-like tone for portraits. You, on the other hand, have shaded your work in a much more aggressive way. So I guess I wasn't referring to the subject matter so much, more the way you chose to represent what you saw. In fact, have you ever tried drawing with charcoal? Or pastel? It seems, judging from the way you use your pencil, that you might find an easy job of those mediums.

Ah, I see. Well none of it was intentional. I'm glad you see something special in it, while I just blame my lack of training.
I've really never tried anything else, never had the opportunity.

Haha, I love the instructions. You're way too modest!
Jennifer, this is amazing!!! Seriously! Great, great job! And what are you talking about, the teeth are really good! They don't look odd at all! I've never seen the original picture either.
Anyway, this is very good, well done.

Aww, too kind. But I'm not modest - I'm realistic, hehe. Can't really be convinced otherwise. But I DO feel I'm beginning to improve which makes me hopeful.
Oh yes, and I'm so glad you're back. I missed you greatly.
