"The Devil You Know (2008)"

Some of the good old stuff. This was a chance for me to revisit an old favorite of mine.

I've been a fan of the DC/Vertigo comicbook "John Constantine – Hellblazer" forever. Although portrayed by Keanu Reaves in the movie, Johnny's creator, Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Watchmen) always pictured him more as Sting. The original painting came about when I found this fantastic picture of the musician back in 1992. I had prepped an illustration board once upon a time to paint a portrait of Daniel Day Lewis, but the idea was scrapped and the board filed away somewhere. The photo I came across catalyzed me back into action. I pulled the board back out and began to heavily apply gesso over the original dabbling. As I started to apply the second coat, parts of the original under-painting started to peal up and blob under the swimmy surface of the new medium. Brilliant! I let the board set up and dry for a few days while I contemplated the work.

More than anything else I wanted to try and capture the feel of a Bob Peak illustration with this piece.

What's that? Who's Bob Peak? Surely you jest? You've probably seen more of Bob's work than any other artist of the last 30 years. Go here and illuminate yourself:

Now, y'all caught?

Sixteen years later, I thought it would be interesting to take a stab at it again; to see if I could still capture lightning in a bottle. I like the vibrancy of the oils and the depth of shadow I was able to achieve with the new piece, but overall I think it's like apples to oranges. Just another step on this journey.
