It used to boggle my mind when I would read interviews with the artists who influenced me and they would talk endlessly about reworking a piece and still not finishing it, or being unable to find a satisfying solution to their painting. They spoke of stacks and stacks of projects waiting to be finished.
How could this happen? How could my idols not have finished each and every painting they turned their hands to? Where was the mastery so evident in the work I was familiar with?
So, late in 2000, I ran across this half finished painting set aside in the closet of my studio, forgotten since I’d started working on it back in 1993-94. Chagrined, I took note of the small but growing piles of sketches and notes for paintings accruing in my own space. Hmmmmm. Maybe there was something to what those guys were talking about.
Anyway, when I reached the third panel, I was sick of the color scheme (or, more likely, I was out of the gouache I’d used for the background of the first two), so I changed seasons.
