Anya is one of the primary characters in The Epoch Mask (© 2015) which (fingers crossed) will be made into a comic/graphic novel at a later date. In it, she and a few others that have been featured on my DA (Ila, Rén, and others) are set in a high fantasy world where they struggle against evil organizations, social upheaval, moral and ethical conflicts, and classic good vs. evil battles in a world filled with magic, mayhem and monsters. Any questions? *points to guy in the crowd*
"Magic? What kind of magic?" Magic in this world is performed by few, and mastered by even fewer. Though they don't call it magic, a class of people known as "Va'lir" exercise what's called "lir" to manipulate their surroundings in one of nine unique ways.
"So... what's a Va'lir?" A Va'lir is a person, a human even, who was born from a bloodline of Va'lir dating back many thousands of years. Blessed with an ability to control their individual lir, Va'lir are known to live long, healthy lives, and enjoy many notable advantages as a result of their latent power. Additionally, their extended lifespans have given them great advantages in society, and as a result Va'lir have been the ruling class for three millennia.
"How is lir used? What kind of magic can they do?" Lir is best described like a muscle. Manipulating lir comes as easy to a Va'lir as lifting one's arm comes to a normal person. When done, a Va'lir can manipulate the element associated with their bloodline, one of nine. For instance, a Fire Va'lir can use his lir to create and shape flames. It's worth noting that Va'lir power is not god-like; a Fire Va'lir can no more hope to set an entire village ablaze than a normal human can hope to lift a giant boulder. Lir has finite strength and limited use, just as any other muscle in the body would. It takes years of practice and training and exercise to be able to use lir safely and powerfully.
"So what are the nine elements of lir?" In no particular order, lir can be used to manipulate fire, earth, water, wind, ice, life, storms, light, and shadow. Anya is a Shadow Va'lir.
"What's a Doria?" More than two and half thousand years ago, Anya's ancestor Semadoria became the first person to conquer the known world. Under her rule, the world was transformed from a violent, warring wasteland into a prosperous, peaceful paradise. When she died she passed down everything she learned and everything she created to her granddaughter Soli, who took up the later half of her grandmother's name and became Solidoria. Tradition then became that the highest ruler of the greater realm shall be known as 'the Doria', and her name shall be altered to reflect that status (e.g. Anya became Anyadoria). Under the Doria's rule a total of 9 kings/queens oversee the 9 realms.
"I see... so the Doria is like am empress!?" Almost! Imperial states work to expand their horizons and extend the empire. The greater realm is a collection of 9 kingdoms (realms), all of which swear fealty to the Doria, but have the authority to rule their kingdoms separately from each other.
"Neat, so what is Novawald?" Novawald is one of the nine realms. The central city, also called Novawald, located in dawnflower pass, sits at the intersection of the Red and Entik mountain ranges, and is centrally located within the nine realms. Anya is heir to Novawald in that her father, Maedan, is the current King of Novawald. He rules the kingdom, while she has authority over all nine realms.
"Ok cool! Now why is she wearing that outfit?" Novawald is known to be a city of much luxury and frivolity. As a central gathering place for people and cultures across the entire greater realm, Novawald is home to festivals, balls, parades, and parties of all kinds. Anya's home, the Acropolis, hosts a ball once each week, the outfit she's seen in here is one that was tailored for her for one such ball.
"If that outfit is for a ball, why is it so revealing!? O.O " Remember when I said using lir is like using a muscle? Well it turns out you can injure yourself using your lir in much the same way as pulling a muscle. When a Va'lir hurts themselves this way, however, the injury manifests by the person's lir tearing a path through the body, resulting in lacerations of various size and severity. As a result, elderly Va'lir are known to have hundreds, or even thousands of scars on their skin, the result of years of lir usage or misusage. Because of this, Va'lir that do not have scars are seen as powerful, wise, and exquisitely beautiful. Young Va'lir like Anya wear revealing clothing quite often, as it gives them a chance to show off their prowess as an un-scarred Va'lir.
"Ah that makes sense! But if scars are seen as undesirable, why do Anya and Ila both have piercings? Also, I've seen that Ila has more piercings than Anya, why is that?" Unlike lir scars, piercings are a cultural preference and a personal choice. Anya has 12 piercings(6 in each ear), while Ila has 15; this is because Ila lives in Feychal, a city east of Novawald, where piercings are seen as a more desirable trait.
"Got it! But why 12 piercings? Why not 2, or 5 or 29?" Anya has 12 piercings because of her religion: Trinism. Also known as the Church of the Third (to which Anya, as reigning Doria, is given an honorary rank as Scion), Trinism worships an ancient pantheon of gods that are believed to be the source of the lir. They worship the third and final god of this pantheon, and reflect that teaching in many ways, such as revering the cardinal numbers: 3, 9, 27; and recommending that their followers adorn themselves with holy numbers (such as by getting piercings in sets of three)
"So why the chain?" The chain has a long story attached to it, with many spoilers! But suffice it to say, in recent years the chain has become Anya's favorite weapon, as well as a go-to part of her fashion; she never leaves home without it.
"What's the sun symbol that Anya always wears?" The nine pointed eclipse is the sigil of Anya's house (Shailon) and a symbol of the Doria that has been passed down through the ages.
Well that seems like plenty for now, I could go on for days (literally, probably more like weeks) so I should stop here before it becomes an even bigger wall of text.
To any that got through the whole thing, thank you! If you want more please comment and ask questions! <3 you all!
