In kicking around ideas for the Bolphunga character, going "over the top" with it was to be expected. He's an extremely colorful character after all. For his face, I was somehow inspired by the late actor Ernest Borgnine, and it was his voice that I heard in my head at the time, barking Bolphunga's blustering dialogue. I pushed the caricature from there, adding various armor pieces cobbled together from vanquished opponents, along with some brutal weaponry also collected as trophies. Among Bolphunga's numerous battle scars was the evidence of his most grievous victory "souvenir," a left leg amputation below the knee. Of course, he patched up his own leg, and added a mechanical prosthetic taken from another of his many challenge conquests.

In the end, however, the director decided to go in a different direction for this character design.
