Description
WB Marketing art, SPEED RACER. Pencil.Well... I reckon it's safe to post this now, seeing as the movie raced through its theatrical release as speedily as the title character's namesake. Heheh.
It's a very tricky thing translating a property from one medium to another, television to film, animation to live action, and vice versa. A balance must be properly struck that takes full advantage of the new medium, while taking care never to disrespect the original rendition (unless one is satirizing). A filmmaker must decide how faithful to be, while freely manifesting his/her own vision. It must be decided what to include in the adaptation, and what to wisely jettison.
In the case of SPEED RACER, and other notable cartoon-to-live action transfers, I continue to fail to understand why they try to so closely emulate animation. Full animation is an art form in which the human imagination is more unleashed, and it becomes pointless to expend the effort to capture this with real actors and situations. It's an exercise in futility really, and the result is most often merely an amusing oddity at best. Look what we can do with a hundred-plus million dollars.
So it is with SPEED RACER, a film only for the most ardent fans, and bedazzled children. It's a loving tribute to the cartoon, surely. But for all that, it's far too long, too technically glitzy, and a bit too silly.
I DO think the casting of the main characters was brilliant, though.
But in the end, was it all really necessary?

ok guys, i love this pic! the artist got the image of the live action speed racer, emile hirsch, love, love, love it. as for the live action movie i was so pleased they did not skimp on the racing scenes and special effects and i think the storyline was awesome. i say that, in my humble opinion and i do mean my opinion, it was refreshing to see a film that did not have a lot of cussing or a heavy sexual theme. However, like i said my husband and enjoyed it. I would love to hear what everyone else thinks. i love deviant art...freedom to express ones self whether in drawing, fanfiction or however way an artist can be themselves and not be what everyone else wants u to be. now...i am off my soap box. LOL passionate artist here. lOl

The movie was actually pretty good. I shudder to think what another company would have done. I was actually inspired to do some Speed Racer fan art again after watching the movie then going back to watch the cartoon. They did good getting John Goodman for Pops "Dragon" Racer. Lovely work by the way. You captured Emile's face grandly.

Thank you.
When I first saw the film, I was sorely disappointed, but after subsequent viewings, I've made peace with most of it. I've never been one to favor adapting animated properties to live action; I feel it's primarily an exercise in transferring characters from a free-flowing medium to a much more limited one. And they're usually too silly. SPEED RACER falls prey to this phenomenon as well. But my biggest problem was with the overly complex plotline, the overwhelming color palette, and the over-designed racetrack and cars for the finale. The good point is that the Wachowskis actually showed a familiarity and affection for the property rather that the customary Hollywood contempt.

I just watched the first 11 episodes and felt a nostalgia. They should have set the movie in the time it actually took place. That and the CG was overworked. I'd rather see a modern anime rendition, same plot and setting just more modern animation would have been neat.

Good point. I agree. As I said, animation is a very liberating form. Choosing to do fantasy in live action is inevitably more limiting.

Then again, plain illustration is also kind of limiting. You have to nail a single pose in a shot. All I'd be good for is trying to storyboard XD It's essential a series of photo sized illustrations of varying detail I think. Not sure about the exact size of one though. I'm glad you make time to talk with me about all this.

But for all its wackyness and glitz, I quite enjoyed Speed Racer. Just my opinion.

sorry you didn't enjoy the flic--i did--i especially liked it's messages about pursuing one's dreams/vision, and the importance of friends and family...
i also think that describing it as, "an exercise in futility," discounts the fact that it does have a great deal of appeal for those groups whom you described, i.e. fans and kids--for us it's wasn't "futile..."
but this is your page, so you can say what you want...
but even if you didn't like it, it still provided you with a paycheck, so it at least has that much going for it...

I'm glad you enjoyed the film. Truly. Every movie has its admirers, no matter how it may be widely received.
You're correct. I am entitled to say what I want on my own page, provided that I demonstrate the respect I wish to have returned. However, I believe I'm entitled to express my opinion anywhere else as well, letting the chips fall where they may.
The description I used, 'an exercise in futility,' was not specifically directed at SPEED RACER. It was a general opinion directed at the trend in Hollywood of translating animated properties to live action, thereby also encompassing SCOOBY-DOO, UNDERDOG, GARFIELD, FAT ALBERT & THE COSBY KIDS, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS, INSPECTOR GADGET, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, THE FLINTSTONES, etc., ad nauseum. It's rare that McMovies of this sort turn a box-office profit, so even under that consideration, the entire exercise is indeed futile. This is the "big picture," and obviously it does not consider the minority percentage of audiences more inclined to be satisfied. Hollywood, of course, as a business, is most concerned with their dividends. But I was referring to more artistic merits.
As far as my paycheck, that in itself does not buy my favorable review, nor should it. I was paid to do a job, not to be a Yes Man. I think I fulfilled my obligation rather well, and nothing more can be expected. Anyone whose loyalty is also for sale has no honor.
I've worked on numerous projects for which I had no special fondness, but my professionalism dictated that I perform at my highest level.
For the record, I loved the SPEED RACER cartoon as a kid, and so my familiarity with the property was invaluable to my WB employers. Nevertheless, I made it known to them my reservations concerning the film ahead of time. Fearlessly, I spoke my heart, and maintained my integrity, for which I continue to have the respect of my clients.
Most importantly, I can respect myself.
I regret if you took any offense at my forthright comments.

What do you think about the fact that a japanese cartoon was made with no japanese characters? Just curious about your thoughts on that.....
gorgeous image, I think you captured the essence of the movie perfectly.

Thanks, Curvy!
As for your question...
Not to be sarcastic, but the original cartoon was made without Japanese characters, too, at least in physical appearance. Most anime characters resemble Caucasians, not Asians, with the rounded, naturally blue eyes, and naturally blonde hair. Japanese pop culture has always been heavily influenced by the American counterpart, and it's ironic that now the reverse is also true.
Clearly, the SPEED RACER characters were created idealistically as white. But yes, Hollywood historically has a tendency to hedge their box office bets by blurring the lines of ethnicity. Remember that they cast Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones in "The Mask of Zorro."
My feelings are ambivalent at this point.

one thing I've noticed with Anime, they are very heavily influenced by the West, but at the same time, check out the faces they create when they show their true expressions. They don't look western at all. I always wondered why a character like Naruto had blonde hair, but when i see him smile or get truely excited, he looks like a Japanese boy with blond hair. I hear you on the blurring that Hollywood does, thankfully they've done that more so recently, but I just find it weird in some situations. If the actor better portrays the character than another and it doesn't hurt the character, I don't see why a person of a different ethnicity plays them. I just found it strange that a Anime character was being portrayed as a caucasin..... I hate that my initial thought to everything is it should be white, simply because thats all I saw when I was younger.

Truth is stranger than fiction. And yet it also often influences fiction.
A great many of us as youths suffered the indoctrination that Caucasian is the ideal race, and the standard of beauty according to this programming still persists. Note the perception of celebrities such as Halle Berry, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, and others who, while all regarded as black, are deemed beautiful due to features that most prominently reflect or resemble Euro and Anglo characteristics.
An amusing irony of recent times is how the reverse has become true as well, with Caucasian females who exhibit some physical traits considered black are all the rage. Notice the more luscious lips of Pfeiffer, Scarlett Johansson, and Angelina Jolie, as well as the obsessive trend toward darker tans.

Nice piece. As for the movie, I would have rather have seen them do it "for real" with real logic and dilemma's or just do a cartoon... with all the stilted lip-sync and staggered animation techniques...
I really could figure out who the audience for that film would be — wasn't me, though...

Which confirms my point. Why translate something to another medium if you have no intent to add something to the mix? To say something new? It should've remained an animated project rather than this strange hybrid. It's just a waste, a curiosity that can only serve the greed of Marketing if successful. It offers nothing for the mass audience not acquainted with the original show, a grievous sin of any genre film.
But still, at least it's better than UNDERDOG, or MR. MAGOO.
I'm glad you enjoyed the movie!
Oh, by the way... Shouldn't your screen name be, "La bruja loca?" ("The crazy witch")
