The K'i-Lin, in china. Also known as the Kirin in Japan....

I'd like to say something here... This image was sparked after several people told me things like... "A dragon can't have hair or feathers. A unicorn can't have horse hooves or a curved horn. A naga-type creature can't have six arms." etc.

This is fantasy. The wonderful thing about fantasy is that you can make whatever you feel like making. So... with that in mind... I sat down and researched the K'i-lin. I didn't look at any other artist's rendition of this creature... I simply read page after page after page of descriptions on K'i-lin. Then I drew what my mind's eye told me. This is what *I* see when I think of the K'i-Lin. This is *my* interpretation of the words I read about a mythical (to some) creature.

I'll be doing an entire series... focused mostly on different culture's take on unicorns right now, since my researches lead me in some... interesting directions. Expect the unexpected...

But what I am trying to say is this: Please, take a little time to think before you say that something "can't be". Keep in mind that each time you say that, you are working to surpress an artist's creativity a little more... until they no longer want to express themselves through art. Unfortunately for all the people who have told me I "can't" do something.... I'm afraid that I don't listen very well. Sorry.

You can always do something, anything, more than before.

And anyone who says otherwise can be sent to the long list of fans who agree with me. We could have quite a lot of fun.

This is very pretty indeed. I have no idea about K'i-Lins as it's not something I've researched *makes note of name* but they look fascinating, and have a rather gorgeous body shape. It's a lovely piece of work *_*

I think I know what you mean about people saying 'can't'. I constantly get told that drawing things the way I do is wrong- for instance I was in art class and was told to draw a tree. Everyone drew a green tree I drew a fall tree and people told me I was drawing wrong. And I draw dragons with fur and feathers and people tell me dragons don't have fur or feathers. With art people have to think outside the square if there is one at all.

this is an absolutely beautiful pic, the hair and scales are awesome, it's all wonderful! and yea, you're totally right...there is no right or wrong in art...if there was, then it wouldn't be much 'art' anymore, huh? lol

How can anything be impossible to draw?
if you can imagine it, the only thing stopping them from putting it down on paper would be their skill level. Or their thoughts on how it would be "proper" to display a thing.

I love the detail on this, it's absolutely gorgeous. I have to fav it.

So true..... its tiring when people are so stuck in the normal way that creatures are portrayed.

I really like these by the way..... excellent job making a beautiful image as usual.

Not sure why anyone would tell you what you can and cannot do when creating fantasy art...
But, anyway, great drawing.

You'd be amazed. If it's not the 'classical' fantasy then 90% of the time the comments are riddled with people saying that it's not right and you can't do that.

Seems rather close minded of people to say such a thing, afterall, the best fantasy artwork is when someone deviates from the 'normal' way of thinking.

Thanks for making life a little bit brighter and a little more magical through your art.

JessicaMDouglas In reply to thundercake [2004-10-16 17:55:03 +0000 UTC]

no but *at least* one person mentions it on every single one of my drawings. Got a buddy who's bringing it down so I can see what's so interesting.

......... I don't even know what it is. Is it a tv show or something?

thundercake In reply to JessicaMDouglas [2004-10-17 01:35:01 +0000 UTC]

It's a manga, then a TV show. (Manga's sort of a graphic novella if you werent sure) It's set apart from all other japanese art primarily because its not about romance or robots or anything but fantasy creatures and really intricate mythological subplots. I really recommend the manga...the anime leaves much to be desired, though colour is nice.

"A dragon can't have hair or feathers"? Yeah, that's a stitch, considering dragon concepts have sometimes originated from multiple animals, including birds from the Amazon. Much appraisal for your well-spoken words on supression of imagination and interpretation.

BTW, I'm fav'-ing this. It's a very beautiful must have. Well done! ^^

JessicaMDouglas In reply to ToraKatt [2004-10-15 22:38:10 +0000 UTC]

actually I used the same greens for both, just varying degrees of shading.
Dark Umber
Sienna Brown
Beige
Dark Green
Marine Green
Grass Green
Limepeel
True Green
Apple Green
White
Light Umber

Those are all the colors for the scales.

In my opinoin when someone draws something the way they see it, it turns out wonderful. What would the world be like without different renditions of things? I love to see peoples versions of unicorns and dragons and mermaids and fairys and everything, it expands the mind! I like this picture a lot, its very interesting, and I love the detail. ^^

Who says dragons cant have hair or feathers? I draw them with hair all the time. (feathers are a tad more rare though )
This is beautiful. they are so unique and cool looking. I love it when people draw a mythical creature as they see it. In their own style. I'm sort of doing that right now. ^^ I take traditional mythical creatures like fawns, dragons, mermaids etc. And I draw them as i see fit. I find it really great that another person is doing that. ^_^
Very great job. Not just on the idea, but also in the colouring. The detail in their scales and hair is so awesome. And the bamboo scroll is too. I love bamboo. ^_^
Very very nice. I love it.

and those scales must have taken some time to do O_o looks reallly great

and i hate when people make up "rules" of what one can draw and cant >_<
the greatest thing about being an artist, musician or a writer, is that you can create your own world without the rules of realism...

I can't stand it when people say, "A fairy has to look like this...." or "A dragon can't look like that..." or stuff like that. It's fantasy. Use your imagination. There' no boundaries or limits. Nobody can tell you what you can or can't do. It's that simple. You did a -very- lovely job!

If you are doing research on multi-cultural views of Unicorns, there is a wonderful book you should look at: "The Lore of the Unicorn," by Odell Shepard. It contains illustrations, but you could simply skip over those.
