This is so sad. I think had Dean not come back, Sam would have most certainly accepted the Devil; he'd lost everything else. But when Dean came back, Sam found himself trapped and confused. Dean couldn't adjust and could not help himself let alone his brother, so they had to muddle through their own problems alone. Heaven's and Hell's tactics worked; they separated the brothers without having to do it physically. Sam, who was once gentle and sensitive, had to cut himself to pieces in order to survive-or maybe he was hoping not to survive.
I once reviewed a piece of fanfic and mentioned to the writer how I was somewhat surprised that Sam had not attempted to commit suicide. either that or maybe it was something the writers were not allowed to discuss or confront on TV. The fanfic writer (NOT a Sammygirl) simply said that Sam was too narcisstic to attempt such a thing. but I don't think that's the case at all. I think Sam and Dean both believe they belong in Hell... I think that was their father's influence. And I think that's not only tragic, it's emotional abuse.
I appreciate you sharing this; it has brought me to tears.
