Description
The discovery of the ruined Alphard IV ecumenoplis and orbital superstructures baffled Federation archeologists and created intense discussion throughout the scientific community. Indeed, the existence of a powerful but xenophobic interstellar state had been recorded in antiquity by several neighboring species but these have largely been dismissed or written off as myth. Closer inspection reveals that the majority of the structures are at least 500,000 years old, showing a level of technological advancement that even predates the Iconians.

It is currently unknown what became of its inhabitants, named the “Chiarans” in most accounts. The historical poems of the nearby Tsh’Kanans depicts several aspects of Chiaran society. Although xenophobic, their society was benevolent in nature and even assisted foreign starships which wandered into their territory. Whilst the Chiarans were able to achieve a level of advancement unseen elsewhere, they refused to share any semblance of technology, for fear of misuse. Notably, the poem’s final chapter, set around 300,000 BC shows the Chiarans on the verge of ascension into beings of pure energy – a fulfillment of a civilization-wide quest for true enlightenment. Their belief system had reached a point where technological progress became an irrelevant goal. In its place, the true way to explore the universe and other dimensions beyond the physical plane was through the power of the mind itself.

The last decades of their society see their planet-wide city fall into disarray as mass hysteria takes hold of the population, this was observed by several neighboring races as well, which all depict massive rays of white energy emanating from multiple areas of the Chiaran planet. This cosmic event lasted for several days, creating a massive energy cloud impenetrable by any means, becoming the Chiaran Barrier (Alphard Void in Starfleet nomenclature). It was only in 2372 when the cloud had apparently dissipated, exposing the remnants of a once flourishing civilization.
