Description
I'll usually spend a few hours wandering the streets each night; like the heart of all great cities, Central Melbourne is a riot of grandeur and squalor, vice and virtue, hope and despair. This image emerged unbidden from the black waters of the Yarra River, which exert a strong pull on the melancholic while reflecting the bright lights of casinos that attract blind optimists.Related content

I've been to the Crown Casino and this is so true.

This one's struck a chord with lots of people. I don't gamble myself, and am amazed at the size and influence of an industry that basically just charges people an additional voluntary tax. This image could also be taken as a greater commentary on how the promise of easy wealth can seduce and in some cases destroy us.

The pokies used to be only in NSW (I don't know if you're old enough to remember that time?)& I had no problems with them then, but they came to Bendigo in the 1990's and I got hooked!! I haven't gambled for about 12 years now, but your mention of a "voluntary tax" is so true!! I don't intend to ever set foot in a pub that has poker machines in it again.
I heard about a woman who went down to the Crown Casino from Bendigo on a bus trip. She won - the choice of $50,000 or a car. She chose the $50,000, and before the night was out, she had put it all back into the casino. It's an addiction.

$50K or a car. Damn.
I would have taken the car and got as far away as possible.

You're too kind!. I usually post sci fi or horror illustrations, so it's nice to see a serious allegorical piece being so well received.

Well put. It's something us creative sorts aren't immune to either, what with requests for tattoo designs, album covers, etc!

You expressed a very strong message. Did you have a reference for the fish?

This one came straight from my head, though I've always been fascinated by strange creatures and have seen plenty of photos and illustrations of deep sea fishes in my time.

It looks so natural! Reminds me of an episode of "Weird Creatures with Nick Baker", if you're fascinated by strange creatures you should check this show out.
