To be fair, though, Voltron: Legendary Defender did not suffer because of its anime-esque style because, well, the original cartoon, Voltron: Defender of the Universe was anime.
I've heard a few quips in recent years that, because anime did so much for so many American companies in the 70s and 80s, that some modern studios are returning the favor by modeling their Americn-produced cartoons on the anime stylings. I assure you I am not a weaboo, but it's easy to say American studios and executives just "copying" a popular trend versus coming up with original visual style content, but, well, mainstream popularity has to come from somewhere, right?
