The instant that the elevator door opens, in the lobby, the Thing is confronted with several people standing and waiting.
The Thing wasted no time and grabbed the hapless people and dragged them into the elevator where it tore them into pieces and reassembled them, to suite it's needs.
Look! Look at the agonized expressions on the victim's faces.
Their minds are still intact. They are completely conscious and aware, and in indescribable white-hot-shrieking agony!
The roiling, twisting, churning, bone-crushing, ligament-tearing motions don't bother the core-Thing......., what ever that may be.
What the core-Thing actually is is still unknown.
Authorities will very soon have plenty of specimens to examine.
